Ocean’s 8 is the new comedy, heist film in the Ocean movie franchise. Whereas the previous films starred an all-star male cast, this one switches it up with an amazing cast of female leads that make for one enjoyable movie. The movie takes place roughly five years after the last film in the series, Ocean’s 13. Sandra Bullock takes the lead in this film as Debbie Ocean, Danny Ocean’s sister. Just like her brother, she also decides to go for one more big score after spending a short time in prison.
She recruits a new cast of leading ladies to accompany her in her clever scheme to steal millions of dollars worth of jewels. A few of the many other notable faces in her group include: Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, and Rihanna.
Every member of the cast is terrific and the humorous interactions between the women were very true to life with their comedy, similar to the way the cast of Bridesmaids interacted. Ocean’s 8 combines a good female ensemble with the excitement of a heist film that stays true to the Ocean franchise. There’s nothing like a good, old-fashioned heist film and the Ocean franchise’s heists are anything but old-fashioned. Throughout the movie the audience thinks they know exactly what is going on, but that’s just setting everything up for the twists and turns of the ending.
Judging this movie solely on its advertising, audiences may be quick to think the studio wanted to cash in on the #metoo movement, which they probably did, however, this time around they actually produced an excellent movie that will inspire young women and most likely be the start of a whole new franchise.
Whose Review gives Ocean’s 8 the overall rating of “George Who?” George Clooney helped carry the franchise through three films but in no way is his presence missed in this one. Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett are even more entertaining to watch than George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Their chemistry alone makes the entire runtime enjoyable, but add in the rest of the cast and it’s pure popcorn entertainment.
