Native American on Suncoast

Native America: In Translation

Native America: In Translation
USF Contemporary Art Museum, 3821 USF Holly Drive, Tampa, FL 33620

Native America: In Translation assembles the wide-ranging work of nine Indigenous artists who pose challenging questions about identity and heritage, land rights, and histories of colonialism. Probing the legacies of settler colonialism and photography’s complex and often fraught role in constructing representation of Native cultures, the exhibition includes works by lens-based artists offering new perspectives on Indigenous identity, reimagining what it means to be a citizen in North America today.

Works included in the exhibition address cultural and visual sovereignty by reclaiming Native American identity and representation. Honoring ancestral traditions and stories tied to the land, Koyoltzintli (Ecuadorian-American, b. 1983) reflects on how the landscape embodies traditional knowledge, language, and memories. Nalikutaar Jacqueline Cleveland’s (Yup’ik, b. 1979) photographs of contemporary tribal communities in western Alaska document Native foraging and cultural traditions as a form of knowledge passed through generations. Revealing stories of trauma and healing, Guadalupe Maravilla (American, b. El Salvador, 1976) communicates autobiographical and fictional narratives informed by myth and his own migration story.

Hours: August 25 – December 1, 2023, Monday through Friday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Saturday 1-4 p.m.; Closed Sundays

For this solo exhibition on the Suncoast, Carlos Bunga will create a temporary structure with common materials such as cardboard and masking tape that deploys light as his primary conceptual basis. Bunga’s transformative installation and poetic images will invite visitors to consider how we shape and are shaped by our surroundings, to contemplate their ephemerality, and to attend to light in a time of darkness.

PJK Neighborhood Chinese

PJK Neighborhood Chinese

PJK Neighborhood Chinese
835 4th Avenue South Naples, FL 34104

PJK Neighborhood Chinese Restaurant is the newest eatery of legendary restaurateur Paul Fleming and his wife, Jody Goodenough-Fleming.

Paul and Jody made Naples their home in 2016. They were inspired to create a great restaurant in their neighborhood serving vibrant Chinese flavors crafted with clean, locally sourced ingredients and the bounty of fresh seafood available in their coastal community. Blending traditional craftsmanship and a commitment to scratch-made sauces, the PJK menu features delicate hand-folded soup dumplings, perfectly prepared local seafood, and the sweet craveable heat of traditional Chinese dishes like orange beef with spicy Sichuan sauce.

The Flemings think that a good meal is not just about the food but also about the experience. They offer family-style entrees that can be shared, roasted Peking duck for two, dim sum, a wide variety of wines, and special craft cocktails to create an unforgettable dining experience. The bar and patio are spacious and comfortable, with a lively atmosphere and refreshing coastal breezes that add to the warm and relaxed nature of their upscale restaurant.

Hours: Sunday through Thursday 4 p.m. – 9 p.m., Friday/Saturday 4 p.m. – 10 p.m.
