From micro artworks here on the Suncoast, the size of your hand to mammoth room-sized installations, the national roster of women artists in “A Beautiful Mess” push the boundaries of their textile-based medium. Using rope, yarn, clay, and wire, this group of conceptual artists knot and twist their media into sculptures that range from minimal and hyper-organized to utter pandemonium. They explore personal and political ideals — order and chaos to the extreme — and freely break the rules to create their beautiful artworks. Serious about making a strong cultural and intellectual impact, this group deftly weaves its message into works that demonstrate extraordinary technical skill.

In 1936 a young Midwestern couple came to Anna Maria Island on their honeymoon. They vowed to return someday and build a little restaurant on the beach. They returned in 1952 (after Grandpa served in WWII) with their two young children, bought this piece of land, and built this place. Carl (Skinny) Freeman & his wife, Janice, ran the little beach place they named “Mid-Island Drive-In.” The Manatee Ave bridge did not exist, and few businesses existed there. Grandpa & Grandma “Skinny” envisioned the uniqueness of this island and knew one day it would be “one of a kind.”
After all these years, Skinny’s Place remains a one-of-a-kind eatery on Anna Maria Island. Skinny’s Classic burgers made your way, comfort food made fresh and topped how you like it.
