Sally Field Shines in Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures — A Heartfelt Story That Sneaks Up on You for Suncoast Post Readers

| Sande Caplin |

There are movies you watch for explosions, superheroes, or edge-of-your-seat thrills. Then there are films like Remarkably Bright Creatures — quiet, emotional stories that slowly pull you in and leave a lasting impression long after the credits roll.

Netflix’s newest drama stars Sally Field in one of the best performances of her legendary career, and honestly, this movie may become one of the streaming giant’s most talked-about feel-good films of 2026.

A Quiet Story With a Powerful Emotional Pull

Based on the bestselling novel by Shelby Van Pelt, the film follows Tova Sullivan, a lonely widow working the night shift cleaning an aquarium in a small coastal town. Her life changes when she develops an unusual bond with Marcellus — a giant Pacific octopus voiced brilliantly by Alfred Molina. Yes, an octopus. And somehow, it works beautifully.

What could have easily become a gimmicky “talking animal” movie instead turns into something warm, emotional, and deeply human. The octopus becomes the emotional glue that ties together themes of grief, loneliness, aging, family, and second chances.

Sally Field and Lewis Pullman Anchor the Film

Field is simply remarkable here. She brings depth, humor, sadness, and stubborn strength to Tova, making her feel completely real. Critics across the board are praising her performance, with several calling it one of the strongest roles of her later career.

The chemistry between Field and Lewis Pullman is another major highlight. Pullman plays Cameron, a drifting young man searching for answers about his past. Together, the pair create the emotional heartbeat of the movie, balancing humor with some genuinely touching moments.

Director Olivia Newman keeps the film grounded and intimate, never allowing the story to become overly sentimental — although make no mistake, this is absolutely a tearjerker. Several reviewers described the movie as “warm,” “comforting,” and “heartfelt,” which perfectly captures the experience.

A Gentle Netflix Drama Worth Settling Into

Visually, the aquarium setting gives the movie a calming, almost magical atmosphere. Marcellus the octopus — created through a mix of real footage and CGI — is surprisingly expressive without becoming cartoonish.

This isn’t a fast-paced blockbuster. It moves gently and patiently, allowing the characters and emotions to breathe. Some viewers may find the pacing slow, but if you let yourself settle into the story, the payoff is worth it.

In many ways, Remarkably Bright Creatures feels like an old-school Hollywood drama — the kind of emotionally driven storytelling that Hollywood used to make regularly but rarely does anymore. For readers who enjoy streaming recommendations, Suncoast Post has also shared Chilling with a Netflix Trifecta.

For me, this movie was a refreshing reminder that not every film needs massive action scenes or complicated twists to succeed. Sometimes, all you need is a beautifully written story, great performances, and characters you genuinely care about.

And yes… you may need tissues by the end.
