Back to the Future Past is a new feature of The Suncoast Post. This is the first in a series of stories that go back several years! Our team at The Suncoast Post (formerly, The Sarasota Post) have written many stories about local celebrities, businesses, individuals and more. Vicky Sullivan
Every Sunday night without fail there is a stadium full of musical magic, joy and community packed into a beach side bar and grill in Florida. The Daiquiri Shak in Madeira Beach is home to the Legendary Mad Beach Mafia Open Mic: an amazing, all inclusive, all ages jam hosted by a supergroup of supportive career rockers and where…“All are welcome, children, all are welcome”, my voice rings out through the club every Sunday night (as a nod to Poltergeist, one of my favourite movies). “All of my material comes from the Cinema”…I say with regularity. Today I interviewed the great Jimmy DeLisi of the band Julliet to find out how it all started.
On Monday night at the Manatee Performing Arts Center, Aretha Franklin was being channeled by some of the Tampa Bay area’s best singers! You can’t duplicate one of the greatest artists ever, but they paid tribute to their idol with some of the most amazing performances seen anywhere. This show was so professionally well done it could have been on Broadway or L.A., but it was at the beautiful Manatee Performing Arts Center in Bradenton. Stone Hall with its superb sound and lighting was completely sold out. Randy Wind from WMNF Community Radio kicked the night off introducing the cast as they hit the stage running with the Blues Brother’s movie version of Franklin’s 1968 hit “Think”. Dr. Randall Morgan from Sarasota was a guest speaker giving the audience a lesson in the accomplishments of Ms. Franklin’s life. The show had two acts, starting with some of Aretha’s 1960’s – 1970’s vast catalog of hits.
After a cold blast making its way through the Suncoast, the weekend weather was perfect for the 3rd Annual Sarasota Seafood Festival! Walking up to the fest, the aroma of fresh seafood was in the air! Shrimp, lobster rolls, fresh stone crab, hush puppies and many other dishes by local seafood restaurants like Sarasota favorite Walt’s Fish Market were being consumed everywhere you looked. There were artists selling their wares and baubles, clowns making balloons for the kids, and tables under the trees just to chill out.
2 of the greatest entertainers in our area will be performing on Friday, February 16 at 6 pm, at the “Bikes on Main Block Party” on Main Street in Sarasota. The event benefits Suncoast Charities for Children.
Twinkle and her band “Rock Soul Radio”, and Billy Rice and the “Billy Rice Band” will be performing back to back at the biggest party of the year. Thunder By The Bay is a huge 3 day event and it’s back in Sarasota!
What a year of music in 2017 around the Suncoast and Tampa Bay and it covers a lot of ground, from Spring Hill to Clearwater, St. Pete to Sarasota and every town in between. Music is everywhere from the clubs to the arenas and we are lucky to have some of the best musicians who live on the west coast of Florida. It’s tough to pick a few to acknowledge but I will do my best to list the notables of the year that came our way. Starting with some of the biggest arena and stadium tours:
