As more and more citrus crops succumb to insect infestation, it’s becoming apparent that many grove owners are seeking alternatives to sustain their businesses. Several years ago, Only MOSO of Sunrise,FL approached the owners of Mixon Fruit Farms with an intriguing proposal. They wanted to see if bamboo could grow in their fields and eventually be harvested and sold. Mixon Fruit Farms became the first to plant the bamboo plants.
From Janet Mixon of Mixon Farms- Reminder: Sunday December 9th! We are hosting SimperFi families this Sunday. We would love to have people join us from 12:45 – 1:30 to stand at our gate to welcome them with waving flags and signs that thank them for their service. Let them know that our area appreciates their sacrifices. Please share this post. Thank you Janet Mixon.
It’s Fall, and for many, a favorite time of year. The weather gets cooler, people get nostalgic about the holidays that lie ahead and we all start to think about places to go that remind us of rustic places, pumpkin harvests and seasonal foods. Harvest time is a great time to connect with Sarasota and Manatee County’s second biggest industry – agriculture. It is such a big part of our local scene that agritourism and “farm to table” dining is becoming increasingly popular and fun. More and more local farms are finding ways (beyond the fresh, delicious produce) to get people to come out and enjoy a day on the farm! This past week I visited 3 local farms and loved it! Here is what is going on this Fall/Winter on some amazing local farms!
The best destinations have a story. They are not born from a recent developer’s visions of what a community needs. They are not made with pseudo creations of what people think the past looked like. The best destinations are real pieces of an area’s heritage, bearing familiar sights and sounds that have engaged generations of families to come back year after year. The best destinations are tried and true. We are privileged to have such a place as Mixon Fruit Farms to call our local “real deal.”
