The Queen of Soul: WMNF’s Tribute to Aretha at the Manatee Performing Arts Center in Bradenton, FL

On Monday night at the Manatee Performing Arts Center, Aretha Franklin was being channeled by some of the Tampa Bay area’s best singers! You can’t duplicate one of the greatest artists ever, but they paid tribute to their idol with some of the most amazing performances seen anywhere. This show was so professionally well done it could have been on Broadway or L.A., but it was at the beautiful Manatee Performing Arts Center in Bradenton. Stone Hall with its superb sound and lighting was completely sold out. Randy Wind from WMNF Community Radio kicked the night off introducing the cast as they hit the stage running with the Blues Brother’s movie version of Franklin’s 1968 hit “Think”. Dr. Randall Morgan from Sarasota was a guest speaker giving the audience a lesson in the accomplishments of Ms. Franklin’s life. The show had two acts, starting with some of Aretha’s 1960’s – 1970’s vast catalog of hits.

Giving Hunger the Blues Returns to Sarasota Bayfront In October

Sarasota’s premier outdoor music festival, Giving Hunger the Blues, will return to the beautiful bayfront of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center on October 12 and 13. The two-day event, which will kick of with the second annual Jazz on the Bay, will be headlined by blues star Lauren Mitchell. Mitchell first played GHTB in 2012, when the event was still on Hillview Avenue, but her set was rained out after only three songs. The blues diva, who’s in the midst of a big U.S. tour in support of her hit album Desire, says she can’t wait to come back.

Mark Kracker

Friday, August 24, 2013…..there was a lot of entertainment going on in the Sarasota – Bradenton area.  So much, that I certainly can’t list them all in this article!  That is why Don McKeon’s GoTonite.com is such a great website.   You can get “all” of the entertainment in our area at their website.   Many of you know Mark Kracker.  I met Mark several years ago at the Flying Dog Cafe.  He is truly a great guy!   The “Associates”  (Sande Caplin & Associates) went out on the town last night!  Mark Kracker, photographer extraordinaire helped me with organizing the night’s events.  Mark has joined our team and you can see his awesome photos on several of our websites, including the Swordfish Grill, Faith Presbyterian Church, Dial Hope, Lauren Mitchell Band, Kettle of Fish and more.

Lauren Mitchell Band

Ocean Blues had a unique buzz last night.  You could feel the anticipation in the air as the crowd waited for Lauren Mitchell to take the stage.  Lots of folks hadn’t seen Lauren in awhile.  She had just returned from her first international tour which included stops in Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and our neighbors up north in Canada. And, as ever, she and her band were smokin’ hot!

Lauren Mitchell

It’s was about two years ago when I first heard Lauren Mitchell sing.  I immediately knew that she would become someone very special in the local music scene and beyond.  She had a quality that not very many singers have, and that is Star Quality.  We met in person a couple of months later to discuss a charity event for breast cancer that was to be held at the Flying Dog Cafe.  I asked Lauren if she would sing and she jumped at the opportunity.  That was the day that I agreed, with much excitement, to have my company build a website for the Lauren Mitchell Band.
