Not much has changed at the Cortez Cafe since the seventies when fishermen in the sleepy village of Cortez would gather to swap stories and gossip over a hearty breakfast and a bottomless cup of coffee before heading offshore. In 2002, owners Sam and Debi Varelis left their respective careers in wholesale produce sales and real estate to carry on the tradition of Cortez’s community gathering place. In 2003, they expanded into the hair salon next door, nearly doubling the size of the size of the restaurant.
Rose Lipke has a truly diverse and unique skill set. Born and raised in the small fishing village of Cortez, Florida, at the age of 12 she fished and crabbed commercially after school and during summers, learned the art of wooden boat building, and became an activist to conserve and preserve the environment and the traditional maritime way of life.
The 5th Annual Stone Crab Festival is set for Sat., November 5th and Sun., November 6th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (and later at the restaurants) and it’s free! Word on the street – it’s one of the most widely attended events of the season and it happens in one of the only historic, working fishing villages in the state.
