We Lost Our Dear Friend, Joni

Our community lost a great friend last week, Joni Luckenbill. It came as quite a shock to anyone who knew her.  Joni’s smile was contagious, and her loving spirit brought us so much joy.

I met Joni and her then boyfriend, Don McKeon at the old Flying Dog Café about 10 years ago.  They loved coming to the famous Thursday night “Jam at the Dog.”  It was the place to be on Thursday nights!  Flying Dog Owner Bruce Famiglio- “Joni & Don came every Thursday night.  They danced, dined, made so many new friends and really helped to bring the local music scene to a new level!  It was a tradition that they would go home with a couple of “Reuben Sandwiches” to have for lunch on Friday.”

I got to spend many a Thursday night with them and they would share stories about their childhood and so much fascinating information.  Joni loved going to the theater.  She became part of our crew for almost 10 years attending the events at the Sarasota Film Festival.  Don wasn’t interested in going so it became a tradition that Joni would go solo, and we had so much fun.  She would aways dress to the nines and had a ball!  It’s a memory that I will cherish forever.

It you are part of the local music scene, you knew Joni.  She loved going to outdoor concerts and local music venues.  Besides the Flying Dog, she loved going to The Blue Rooster, Stottlemyer’s Smokehouse, Swordfish Grill & Tiki, Mattison’s and so many more.  Whenever Dana Lawrence and Kettle of Fish were performing, Joni and Don were always there!

Over the years, Joni was always helping Don to promote his pet project “GoTonight” and  They were both great promoters and loved spreading the word.  When they announced several years back that they had gotten married it put the icing on the cake!

We lost Don a couple of years ago and now Joni will be joining him in a better place.  I’m sure they are both looking down at us with big smiles on their faces.

Hey Joni, Hey Don-  The next song & the next dance is for you.  Peace and love.

Condolences to Joni’s son, Dustin, her family, and friends. A memorial service date will be announced soon.
