Sarasota County Offers Free Self-Service Sandbag Stations Ahead of 2025 Hurricane Season

| Suncoast Post Staff |

Updated Story:
As part of its proactive hurricane preparedness efforts, Sarasota County is opening free, voluntary self-service sandbag stations to help residents safeguard their properties during the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs through November 30.

The county will host monthly sandbag events at three convenient locations across the region on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, August 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

  • Ed Smith Stadium – 2700 12th St., Sarasota
  • Twin Lakes Park – 6700 Clark Road, Sarasota
  • South County Fleet Facility – 4571 SR 776 (Englewood Road), Venice

At each site, residents can access free sand and bags, but are required to fill and load the bags themselves. Residents should bring their own shovels and gloves, though a limited number of shovels will be available for use on-site. Each vehicle will be allotted 10 empty sandbags to fill and take home.

These self-service stations are designed to complement Sarasota County’s traditional storm-response sandbag distribution, which is typically activated shortly before a storm’s arrival. By holding these earlier events, the county aims to give residents more time to prepare and reduce last-minute demand during emergencies.

“Taking steps now to protect your home can make a big difference during a storm,” said a Sarasota County spokesperson. “These self-service stations offer residents a chance to prepare ahead of time, at their own convenience.”

Sandbags can help reduce water intrusion during heavy rains, especially in low-lying or flood-prone areas. Sarasota County Emergency Management encourages residents to also review their evacuation zones, update emergency kits, and sign up for local alerts through Alert Sarasota County as part of a comprehensive hurricane preparedness plan.
