Sarasota County Government Offices Closed for Presidents Day – What Residents Need to Know
Most Sarasota County Government offices will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16, in observance of Presidents Day, a federal holiday honoring the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and celebrating the legacy of U.S. presidents.
Residents should plan ahead for county-related services, as many administrative offices and facilities will not operate on the holiday.
What’s Closed on Presidents Day
The following Sarasota County services and offices will be closed Monday:
- Libraries and Historical Resources branches and offices
- Breeze Transit administrative offices and ticket outlets
- UF/IFAS Extension Office in Sarasota County
- Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources recreation centers, including:
- Englewood Sports Complex
- Knight Trail Park Pistol and Rifle Range
- Bee Ridge Chemical Collection Center, administrative office and The Re-Uz-It Shop (8750 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota)
- Administrative office at the Central County Landfill (4000 Knights Trail Road, Nokomis)
- Public Utilities cashier windows and customer service offices at:
- Sarasota County Operations Center (1001 Sarasota Center Blvd., Sarasota)
- Robert L. Anderson Administration Building (4000 S. Tamiami Trail, #2070, Venice)
- Sarasota County Tax Collector
- Sarasota County Property Appraiser
- Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections
- Sarasota County Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Comptroller
- Online services remain available at SarasotaClerk.com
- Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County
⚠️ The Jackson Road Chemical Collection Center in Venice remains closed indefinitely due to impacts from Hurricane Ian.
What’s Open and Operating as Usual
While many administrative offices are closed, several essential services will continue without interruption:

All will operate on their regular schedules.
🗑️ Trash, Recycling & Yard Waste Collection
- Curbside collection for residents in unincorporated Sarasota County will not be affected.
- Residents should place materials curbside by 6 a.m. on pickup day.
♻️ Landfill & Disposal Operations
The following facilities will operate normal hours:
- Central County Landfill
- Citizens’ Convenience Center (Nokomis)
Hours:
- Monday–Friday: 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Saturday: 8 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Residents unloading by hand must arrive at least 30 minutes prior to closing.
What is Presidents Day?
Presidents Day is observed on the third Monday in February and became a federal holiday in 1879. Originally established to honor George Washington, it has since evolved into a day recognizing all U.S. presidents and their service to the country.
Banks, federal offices, post offices, and many local government agencies nationwide observe the holiday.
