Rising Trend of E-Bike and Dirt Bike Thefts in Sarasota: Police Issue Warning for Online Marketplace Sellers
The Sarasota Police Department is urging local residents to be aware of a growing trend in the theft of e-bikes and dirt bikes, particularly those sold through popular online platforms like Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. Recently, several incidents have been reported in which sellers were deceived during transactions, resulting in the theft of their motorized bikes.
In many of these cases, out-of-town sellers are lured to Sarasota by potential buyers who show interest in purchasing the bikes. The buyer typically requests a test ride of the bike, but once handed over, the buyer never returns. To appear trustworthy, the thief may display cash as a show of intent to pay or even use counterfeit money as a form of collateral before taking off with the bike.
Sarasota police are actively investigating these thefts and are urging people to exercise caution when conducting transactions with strangers, especially during the busy holiday season when online sales typically peak.
Tips for Safe Transactions:
- Meet in a Safe, Public Location: Sellers are encouraged to use the SPD’s designated Transaction Safe Place located in the lobby of the Sarasota Police Department at 2099 Adams Lane. This area is under 24/7 surveillance and open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- Take a Friend Along: Meeting strangers alone can be risky, so always consider bringing a companion for added safety.
- Conduct Meetings During Daylight Hours: It’s safer to meet in well-lit public spaces during the day. Avoid evening meet-ups in low-traffic areas.
- Use Digital Payment Methods: Rather than relying on cash, sellers are advised to use secure online payment platforms that offer more transparency and protection.
- Don’t Let Buyers Test Ride Without Collateral: If a buyer insists on testing the bike, require them to provide valid identification or a deposit before handing over the bike.
What to Do if You Suspect a Theft:
SPD encourages anyone who has experienced similar thefts or has information about these incidents to come forward. Sellers who feel uneasy or suspicious about a potential buyer should immediately report their concerns. To report any information, contact the Sarasota Police Department at 941-316-1199, Sarasota Crime Stoppers at 941-366-TIPS (8477), or submit an anonymous tip online at www.sarasotacrimestoppers.com.
By staying vigilant and following these safety measures, sellers can help reduce the risk of falling victim to these bike theft schemes.
