Michael "The Professor" Hensley

Mike “The Professor” Hensley Is A Lucky Man

| Sande Caplin |

First of all, my apologies to Savannah Brady.  I was on my way to her violin concert at USF with the Perlman Foundation when I received a phone call from Lauren Mitchell, that Mike “The Professor” Hensley was hit by a car while out on his daily bike ride.  He was near the end of his ride on Siesta Drive near the shopping mall when the accident occurred.  The police were on the scene almost immediately and paramedics arrived soon after.  The lady driving the car did not see him.  Mike being Mike at first refused to be taken to the hospital, but finally gave in.  It’s a good thing he did.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital is an amazing facility.  I have never been there before.  I thought parking would be a major hassle, but it wasn’t.  In fact, Valet Parking took my car and it was easy.  The Emergency Room was jammed packed but very organized and professionally staffed.  I was escorted to Mike’s room after a security check.  The triage area was modern, clean, and also very well organized.  When I walked in, there was Mike looking at me kind of groggy, but smiling.  Lauren had the look of a very concerned lady.  The nursing staff and doctors could not be more helpful and receptive.  Mike went through a series of x rays and a CAT scan.  Every step of the way we were explained by the nurses what was taking place.

Sarasota Memorial HospitalMike is a very lucky man.  While bruised all over his body, he is going to be okay.  On the way to the hospital in the ambulance, he actually put his dislocated finger back into place.  Yikes!  Over and over while in the hospital every staff member kept saying that if he wasn’t wearing a helmet, the injuries would be a lot more significant.  Mike is one tough guy.  While driving him home from the hospital he was cracking jokes and wanted to go out to eat.  I think it was the pain killer kicking in!

Many of you are bicycle riders and motorcycle riders.   A wake up call….please wear your helmet.  I know I will now 100% of the time.  It’s easy when you are just running a quick errand not to wear the helmet.  We are so blessed to have Sarasota Memorial Hospital.  It is a marvelous, professional and well organized facility.

Get well real soon, Mike.
