From Sarasota Police Chief DiPino
As your Police Chief of the Sarasota Police Department, I want to take a moment to address the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. In the City of Sarasota, we understand that if something like this happens, wherever it may happen in our great country, it impacts you, our community, our neighbors, our families, and the relationships we have with one another.
I was shocked and outraged by the actions and conduct of the Minneapolis police officer and the inaction of the other officers I observed on the video. The senseless death of Mr. Floyd is tragic, heartbreaking and never should have happened. We grieve with his family, friends, and his community.
The men and women of the Sarasota Police Department are not trained to use tactics I’ve seen in the videos in Minneapolis. The actions of the officers in Minneapolis were inexcusable.
The mission of your Sarasota Police Department is professional, dedicated police service in partnership with our community. The men and women of our agency depend on our community to continue partnering with us to keep the City of Sarasota a safe place to live, work, and play. We have hosted several community use of force days to continue to show our transparency and allow input from our community on our practices and procedures. We have a Police Complaint Committee as well as the Independent Police Advisory Panel where we work hand-in-hand with our community leaders in reviewing our practices, policies and procedures.
As your Police Chief, I promise you that we will continue to be professional, transparent and compassionate as we continue to partner with you, your families and your neighbors to keep our community safe.
Chief Bernadette DiPino
