Lee Middle School Student, Liliana Torres Wins Sarasota Film Festival Student Film Contest
On April 28, Lee Middle School film student, Liliana Torres, got a wonderful surprise in the form of an email from Paul Ratner, managing director of the Sarasota Film Festival. Her film had been chosen to be shown at this year’s festival and she was invited to attend the live screening.
Liliana has been a film student at Lee for the past two years and has already experienced quite a bit of success with her film making. Last year her documentary film, “Digging Deeper”, placed 1st in the District, Regional and State levels of the Jim Harbin Student Media Festival. This state-wide festival is a student-driven program where students create media presentations from idea, to storyboard, to production, to presentation. Students work creatively to design and produce a media forum for their message and compete state-wide with students from each county in Florida. This year Liliana has three film entries that have placed at the district level and moved on to the regional level of the competition. None of this former success could compete with the thought of her film being recognized in a worldwide student film contest.
Last Wednesday night Liliana stood on that coveted red carpet, posed for photos, and watched as her film “Lee vs Corona” was played on the big screen at the CinéBistro Theatre in Sarasota. Liliana’s film compares life at school pre-COVID to life there now. Her ending has an uplifting message that in “Lee vs Corona,” Lee always wins! When they announced the winner of this year’s Parallel Universes student film contest, the name Liliana never expected to hear announced was her own.
Liliana’s parents were equally surprised “We are so proud of Lili! We are amazed more and more every day of her creativity with her films. We cannot wait to see what her future holds.”
The news that she won the entire competition is still sinking in with Liliana, who moments after the announcement asked her teacher, Terri Rohde, which category in the competition her film had won.
“I am excited to create more films for people to enjoy. I look forward to attending MSA (Manatee School of the Arts) in the fall to sharpen my skills”, stated Liliana.
