Bradenton DUI Manslaughter Case: Driver Sentenced to 25 Years After Fatal Cortez Road Crash

| Sande Caplin |

A tragic DUI crash that shook the Bradenton community in 2024 has reached its legal conclusion, as the driver responsible has been sentenced to decades behind bars.

On Friday, prosecutors with the State Attorney’s Office 12th Judicial Circuit announced that Cesar Navarrete will serve 25 years in prison following his guilty plea in a deadly crash that claimed the life of a young mother.

The crash occurred late on the night of November 2, 2024, along Cortez Road West near 43rd Street West, one of Bradenton’s busiest corridors. Authorities say Navarrete was driving at speeds exceeding 115 mph when his vehicle slammed into a Chevrolet Equinox.

The impact was catastrophic. The SUV was reportedly split in half from the force of the collision.

Inside the vehicle was 37-year-old Sara-Danielle Holmes, a mother of two young children. She was seated in the passenger seat and died as a result of her injuries. Her boyfriend, who was driving the SUV, survived the crash.

Impairment and Prior History

Investigators determined that Navarrete was impaired at the time of the crash. A blood alcohol test later revealed a level of .165, more than twice the legal limit in Florida.

The case was further aggravated by Navarrete’s criminal history. At just 27 years old, he had already been previously convicted of DUI and was driving on a suspended license when the fatal crash occurred.

Navarrete and his passenger both sustained serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital following the collision.

Charges and Sentencing

After a thorough investigation by traffic homicide units, Navarrete was charged with multiple serious offenses, including:

  • Vehicular Homicide
  • DUI Manslaughter
  • DUI Causing Property Damage and Personal Injury
  • Driving While License Suspended or Revoked Causing Serious Bodily Injury or Death

Navarrete ultimately pleaded guilty to all charges.

A judge sentenced him to 25 years in the Florida Department of Corrections, followed by 10 years of supervised probation. In addition, his driver’s license has been permanently revoked, and he has been ordered to pay $40,000 in fines and restitution.

A Sobering Reminder

This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of impaired and reckless driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, thousands of lives are lost each year in alcohol-related crashes, many of them entirely preventable.

For the family of Sara-Danielle Holmes, the sentence brings some measure of justice, but no legal outcome can replace the life lost or the impact on her children and loved ones.

Local officials continue to urge drivers to make responsible choices, designate a driver, use rideshare services, or simply do not get behind the wheel after drinking. One decision can change lives forever.

Writer’s note: We all miss our beloved Sara so much. Please continue to pray and support “Grammy” Leesa and her two lovable, adoring, smart and funny grandkids, Charlee and Nova. They hold a special place in my heart.
