Another Local Landmark is Closing- Mixon Farms in Bradenton is for Sale

| Suncoast Post Staff |

Mixon Farms in Bradenton, Florida has been a much-loved part of the community for over eight decades. Established in 1939, the farm provides both locals and tourists alike with fresh produce, fun family activities, and insight into the vibrant history of Florida farming. Unfortunately, it was recently announced that Mixon Farms will be closing for good.

This news came as a surprise to many who have grown up visiting the farm and making cherished memories there. There are many reasons for its closure including labor issues, high cost to continue farming, disease, damaged caused by Hurricane Ian and, is likely due to a combination of factors such as economic hardship, an evolving consumer market preference, and increased competition from larger farms and supermarkets.

Mixon Farms

The closure of Mixon Farms will no doubt have a great impact on the Suncoast community. For starters, locals will now no longer be able to access its high-quality produce which included citrus fruits, blueberries, tomatoes, strawberries and more. The farm also has a wonderful store  where you can purchase homemade pies, jams and other treats were popular with visitors.  There is also a great snack bar.

In addition to providing produce to local customers, Mixon Farms was especially well-known for its family-friendly activities. Kids could interact with animals like goats, rabbits, and chickens at their petting zoo while older visitors could take a train ride around the farm or explore the butterfly garden – these attractions made Mixon Farms an ideal destination for school field trips or family days out.

The closure of Mixon Farms won’t just have an emotional impact on residents; however, it will have economic repercussions too. Many people were employed at the farm including farmers and  retail workers who welcomed visitors when they arrived on site. The loss of these jobs is sure to be felt deeply by those affected as well as their families but wider implications go beyond this.

The closure of Mixon Farms marks a particularly sad day in Bradenton’s history – after all it has been an iconic institution since 1939! But even though Mixon’s doors are closing forever we should take some solace in remembering all that it provided over four generations: fresh produce; family fun; employment opportunities; and most importantly unforgettable experiences that will stay with us forevermore.
