From Downtown Favorite to Inclusive Mission: The Next Chapter for Rise Up Cafe
In the heart of downtown Sarasota, a small cafe once invited locals and visitors alike to slow down over coffee and ice cream, but it did more than serve treats. Rise Up Cafe was a place with a purpose — a local business built around transforming lives and challenging assumptions about ability and employment.
When Rise Up Cafe opened its doors in 2020, it wasn’t just another spot for a sweet treat. The coffee and ice cream shop was a mission-driven venture that proudly employed adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), offering meaningful jobs in a real workplace setting. Over its four years in downtown Sarasota, the cafe employed 35 individuals with IDD and provided hands-on job skills training to more than 350 others, helping people build confidence, friendships, and real work experience.

Locals will remember the welcoming atmosphere: familiar regulars chatting with team members, the cozy outdoor seating, and those homemade ice cream sandwiches crafted with care. Reviews from before its closure celebrated not just the food but the spirit of inclusion embodied by the staff and the community that rallied around them.
In early 2024, however, the cafe made the difficult decision to close its downtown location as part of a strategic shift toward broader community impact. Rather than simply operating a single storefront, the organization behind the cafe — the nonprofit Inclusion Revolution — pivoted its focus toward creating inclusive employment opportunities throughout the region. Rather than a storefront, the mission now extends to job readiness training, placement support, and ongoing assistance for businesses that want to make their workplaces more inclusive.
“We set out not just to serve coffee but to open hearts and minds,” said leaders of the initiative. The closure of the physical location wasn’t the end of that vision; it was a turning point toward larger, systemic change. The hope is that local employers — restaurants, shops, offices — will see the value in hiring people of all abilities and that the skills cultivated at Rise Up Cafe will lead to long-term careers.
Even as the cafe’s storefront has closed, its legacy is visible in the community: the friendships formed, the confidence built, and the lives changed. Families of team members have spoken about the pride of seeing their loved ones thrive, challenging the notion that a disability defines a person’s potential.
For Suncoast residents who value both community and commerce, the story of Rise Up Cafe serves as a reminder that local businesses can be more than economic engines — they can be agents of change.
