I got “Made”

I got “Made”  in downtown Sarasota
Restaurant 1990 Main Street, Sarasota, FL (941-580-0250)

Doing my pre-dining internet homework, I found myself completely amused reading Made’s Menu!!!  To begin with, they listed “Grilled Corn Dogs” as an appetizer!!!  My first thought was of someone’s Mom saying to their kids after school “Sorry kids, nothing special this afternoon to snack on, but I think I still have some corn dogs in the freezer”!!  Continuing on that note, they listed “Cheese (Potato) Tots” as a side!!!……………..BEFORE you stop reading and lose interest let me ‘tantalize’ you with the following description of the Corn Dogs:  “Bacon wrapped, char-grilled, cornmeal dipped, served with MADE ketchup and spicy mustard.”  This was a Corn Dog I wanted to meet up close and personal!

“On the Road to SRQ”

How did YOU get here?
In a city where VERY few people are ‘native Sarasotans’, I have always found it fascinating to know HOW and WHY people found their way to SRQ!  This is the 1st of a series of articles featuring some of your Favorite People telling their OWN Stories!

Bradenton’s Newest Hotspot: Mamma Onesti’s

Prior to going to Mamma Onesti’s, I did my usual Google search and discovered their website:  www.mammaonestis.com.  When I read that the owners’ last names were “Scarpino’ and “Nicoletti’,  I was encouraged!!  Additionally I read that their menu consisted of homemade items from 3 generations of Family Recipes!   I made a mental note to re-watch the Godfather then headed out the door to get my “Italian” Fix for the day! When you first enter Mamma Onesti’s it is very warm and inviting with a bar, high-tops, booths and individual tables.  There are even TV screens should the need to catch up on your favorite team arise!  My companions and I opted to be seated toward the back of the restaurant with a view of their air-conditioned outdoor space.

On The Road with the Lauren Mitchell Band!

Lauren Mitchell sent this to the Sarasotapost.com  very late last night.  Thank you, Lauren and congratulations on a great tour.

Hello from the road, Believers! I thought I’d take a minute to let you all know about some of our adventures while we’ve been on tour. North Carolina was a great start to the trip, jamming with Mel Melton at Papa Mojo’s Roadhouse, and singing with Mac Arnold and Plateful of Blues at the Blues, Brews and BBQ Festival were definitely some highlights for me.

Boatyard Waterfront Bar & Grill

I had a really great conversation with “Scioban” from the Boatyard Waterfront Bar and Grill.  A very busy lady, she’s in a state of perpetual motion almost every day, being the General Manager and the main overseer of the Boatyard.  She’s been working since she was 15, putting herself through school but not really having a vision of working in the restaurant business.  That really supports my theory that what you went to college for might be the total opposite of what you REALLY want to do and where your passions lie.

The Main Street Station Band

A Great 60’s, 70’s & 80’s Band!
Florida’s Gulf Coast is truly blessed to have one of the great bands in the area that plays 60’s, 70’s and 80’s music.  If you haven’t heard the “The Main Street Station Band,” you should.  Last night, they put on a truly inspiring performance at Mannatees Sports Grill in Bradenton, FL.  There were lot’s of “baby boomers” out there last night who were smiling, dancing and enjoying the fabulous music.  Mannatees Sports Grill menu offers something for everyone and they have a great selection of beer, wine and top shelf liquors.

Myakka Blues Fest- An Awesome Celebration

A Great Day At The Myakka River!
Photos by Mark Kracker

To quote Steve Arvey-
“After it’s all said and done, it’s really about the beauty of the Myakka River….After everybody left, I sat and I finally got a second to kick back and thank God and all the people that were blessed to be a part of the celebration of this incredible river and how we all shared in friendship, life and music this day…..I sat for a long while and wished so many more people can see this fantastic river one day.  Thank you Snook Haven for believing in me and helping me and the Suncoast Blues Society to put this fest together.”

David Smash- New CD, State of Sunshine

A couple weeks back I was lucky enough to share a cup of coffee with David Smash and listen to him explain his new CD “State of Sunshine”.  He said he loves 30’s to 50’s American music.  He’s got the American groove going here with an European flair (as he described it).  This CD’s about isn’t.  It isn’t just blues, it isn’t just country or rock-a–billy, it isn’t a copy of any one style, but a whole gamut of influences; it’s his own material written about his American experiences.

Karen and The Big Bad Wolve’s Open Jam Debut !

Karen and The Big Bad Wolve’s Open Jam Debut !

What a huge surprise last night.  A last minute invite from Leslie SRQ brought Laurie and I to Holmes Beach and the debut of a new Jam….. Karen and The Big Bad Wolve’s!  The setting was perfect, the views of the Gulf of Mexico were breathtaking, the music was refreshing and the over 200 folks in attendance had an awesome time.  Families that were walking the beach had a special treat last night.

Don Mckeon- Go Tonight!

I love interviewing people because you never know how crazy their past was or how different it was from your pre-conceived notion. Don McKeon is the perfect example.  Ever a gentleman, well groomed and dapper, I honestly thought he was going to tell me he was a V.P. of a Fortune 500 Company, or a retired lawyer, or maybe even a politician.  So I was giggling inside when I was hearing him tell me that he’s done a myriad of interesting careers from owning a head shop to owning/managing upscale retail women’s wear shops.  I love it!
