Can you hear it? The thunder of thousands of people descending upon Sarasota, some coming by car, most coming by bike, but all returning to the place where it all began. Thunder By The Bay is returning home with a new date, new venue, and renewed efforts to retain its status as a premiere motorcycle festival in the nation. They are celebrating a huge milestone this year, their 20th anniversary! The masses are coming and they are bringing their tourist dollars to infuse Sarasota and the surrounding area with an economic boost and will be providing crucial funding for Suncoast Charities for Children, for whom the event directly benefits. Thunder By The Bay is one of the largest festivals Sarasota has hosted in the past, and by all accounts, this year is going to be a record-breaker.

Be Sweet! Turn on theHeat! is a benefit to help the Whisper n Thunder EREZ fund, which provides heat for poorer Native Americans in the United States and Canada in the form of firewood, propane and/or electricity. The event will feature an art auction, art show, and potluck dinner in addition to entertainment by Frank Silverhawk, John Allen James, Suzanne ‘Raincrow’ Geyer and Joelle Clark. Sadly, some Native Americans freeze to death every winter, because they have no heat for their home/shelter.

Manatee County Prepares for 4th Annual Bradenton Area River Regatta

It’s not often that two cities are able to collaborate on a regionally popular event, let alone one. For those in civil service jobs or those donating their time and talents to various charitable causes, the red tape encountered trying to arrange a large event can be daunting. The 4th Annual Bradenton Area River Regatta will take place on February 3rd, and make no mistake, this year’s festival promises to be a shining example of how Palmetto and Bradenton are harmoniously capitalizing on anticipated crowds nearing 100,000.

After all the hubbub of company in our homes, work gatherings and family get-togethers, it feels nice to slow down. The time between October 31 and December 31 has become one extended holiday. There used to be a small but noticeable time slot following Halloween where you could catch a breath. But now there is pressure to put away the costumes, choose your turkey size and Amazon shop for Christmas all on the same weekend.

As we make the ascension into 2018, we look back at 2017 with wonder at the exciting events that took place. Nationally, we witnessed a new presidency and a myriad of opinions and conversations that have ensued. Floridians and those in the tropics braced for a Category 5 hurricane when Irma blew in but thankfully, for many, it was a quieter event. We pray for those in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands who are still suffering. Locally we witnessed the generous spirit and collective energy of a community that comes together repeatedly to support one another. When word gets out that a member of our Sarasota family is in need, the masses unite. Yes, we are blessed to live in not only a beautiful, tropical paradise but one that beats with a wide-open, generous heart.

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and with its passing marks the beginning of the most anticipated season of the year, Mullet Season. The fall run of the spawning roe-filled lowly little mullet is what put the small village of Cortez on the map as the largest mullet fishery in Florida.
