The Wrap Up on Holiday Recycling

As the holiday season is in full swing, so is the massive pileup of consumerism happening under my Christmas tree. Though we are paring down it feels like we could handle “go time” now, with plenty of evenly-distributed presents ready to build a present hill before each boy. Try as we might, there will be new “stuff” everywhere and as they say, “out with the old, in with the new.” It is hard to look at the neatly wrapped presents with matching paper and coordinating bows without thinking of where the new items will end up, and not just what’s inside but also all of that packaging.

Lucky 13 For Sarasota’s Atomic Holiday Bazaar

It’s that time of the year when finding a perfect gift begins as a slow train of thoughts and list-making and ends in feverish Google searches for something special as the holidays approach. No matter how uncommercial you are going this year, inevitably you will be purchasing a gift for a Secret Santa, White Elephant, Pink Pony—whatever the title may be. Even if your gifts will be lovingly handmade at your kitchen table or purchased online while enjoying a cup of coffee with Christmas movies on in the background, shopping can be a daunting experience. For some, it’s a nice day out with the girls where bargains are lauded over lunch and wine after a few stores have been canvassed. And, still some will ceremoniously fight the crowds and lines to nab that great find at nearby malls.

Which Holiday Movies Move You?

When it comes to holiday movies, people are particular about their viewing lists. Just as soon as the turkey leftovers are tucked in the refrigerator many people are excited to jump into the season of twinkling lights, mistletoe, and, of course, those holly, jolly Christmas movies. There’s not much out there that beats a cozy afternoon on the couch watching holiday movies with your loved ones. Most of the holiday genre films end with a positive message of goodwill and camaraderie with your neighbors and families so you don’t have to put your parental screen up before you dive in to your favorite seasonal flick.

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ignites the Holiday Season!

It is almost time to light the most recognized Christmas tree in the world, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree! Here’s a little history about the iconic tree. The first Rockefeller Center tree went up unofficially on Christmas Eve in 1931 before the Rock was actually completed. In 1933, the tree was officially part of Rock Center and lit every year except during war time in 1944-1945, when the tree remained unlit due to blackout laws. There was one televised tree lighting in 1951 on NBC during “The Kate Smith Show”. The tallest tree ever was a 100 foot tall Norway spruce in 1999.

Reclaiming the Holidays – Focusing On Gratitude and Family

Happy November! Can you believe it? Time is such a relative concept. When you’re young the gaps between hours in a day can seem cavernous, with no end in sight. Conversely, as we age, months take on a hurried pace and pages fly off of the calendar until alas, Thanksgiving and Christmas return. We’ve barely had time to miss them! In keeping with steadfast traditions that sorely include retail greed, merchants have been showing us their jingle bells and Santa mugs for months now. They slowly begin moving their Christmas swag from the back of the store to the front somewhere around Halloween. Then, the week of Halloween you’re not sure if you should shop for costumes or candy canes. It’s confusing, and also a little nauseating if you ask me.

By producing an alternative craft show for Sarasota’s hip shoppers, Atomic quickly grew into a Sarasota holiday shopping tradition.
