The 5th Annual Camping with the Blues Music Festival will be held October 19-21, 2018 at the Sertoma Youth Ranch and will feature Brody Buster One Man Band; LC Williams & the Driver; Duffy Bishop Band; JP Soars & the Red Hots; Scott Ellison Band; Packrats Smokehouse; Prestage Brothers; Gracie Curran & the High Falutin’ Band; Beautiful Bobby Blackmon; Dirty Red & the Soul Shakers; Mark May Band; The Blues Doctors; Amanda Fish Band; Tas Cru & His Band of Tortured Souls and Brandon Santini.

Is it just me or does the time after Labor Day just seem to drag on with rain and more rain? It seems like things to do in the Sarasota and Bradenton area doesn’t start revving up until mid-October or early November. If you are looking for fun things to do in the Sarasota area for September, here are a few ideas to get you through the rest of the month.

Janet Jackson Brings Star Power to the Sarasota/Bradenton/Tampa Area At Mid-Florida Amphitheatre

When I was a kid growing up in Michigan City, Indiana, it was a big thing that the Jackson family was from Gary, a mere 30 miles away. Michael and I were the same age. If you are a baby boomer, you probably grew up along with the Jackson 5, later The Jacksons, solo Michael Jackson and his baby sister Janet. Young Janet was an actress first, I remember watching her as Penny on “Good Times”. She also had roles on “Fame” and “Different Strokes”. In 1986, when MTV was at its prime, Janet’s breakout album “Control” had five hit singles in heavy rotation with a grown up Janet dancing across our TV screens. Next came “Rhythm Nation” and between Janet and Michael they dominated music television and radio stations around the world. They were and are today that iconic musical family dynasty and when she walked out on the stage on Tuesday night in Tampa, there was no doubt that she is still Queen.

As I was walking my dog this muggy, hot July morning I was thinking to myself, July is almost over and then comes hotter August with not a lot to do. I don’t know about you but August doesn’t seem like a very fun month. There are no holidays to celebrate other than International Beer Day (August 8th) and I doubt if your boss is going to let you take that day off. At this point, although I have celebrated the fact the snowbirds have gone home, I am starting to miss my seasonal friends from the north. In order to pass the time, here in hot, rainy Florida I put together a list of things to do to for August around the Sarasota/Bradenton area.

The documentary film “Frenemies”, a Sarasota production, promises to challenge our views of our controversial neighbor. Florida filmmakers Mirella Martinelli and Elizabeth Coffman started shooting their new documentary film, Frenemies. The producers invite Sarasotans to the kickoff event of their Crowdfunding Campaign on 7/11/18. All donations are tax deductible through our non-profit Long Distance Educational Media.

How is your summer going?  We hope you have had ample opportunity to experience some of the spectacular sights we are fortunate to have in our area.  Now, if that red tide would only make a permanent exit and leave our waters and beaches alone, the summer would be perfect.  There are so many interesting venues and natural places to explore on these long summer days.  And now we have arrived at summer’s main event, 4th of July, America’s Independence Day.  As a child I always loved the build-up to 4th of July fireworks and fun.  The event always meant we would gather with friends for a great cookout, swim in the lake all day, probably a bonfire in the mix and the opportunity to sit in the cool night air and watch the spectacular show in the sky while feeling the booms of the fireworks throughout our bodies.  It was magnificent.

Blues guitarist/vocalist Mike Zito recently won the 2018 Rock Blues Artist of the Year at the BMA’s! He is a solo artist as well as a co-founder of the Royal Southern Brotherhood band. He is no stranger to the Tampa Bay Area! He has played Skipper’s Smokehouse and the Tampa Bay Blues Festival! He is acquainted with the Sarasota/Bradenton area, having played many times at Ace’s Live Music Venue in Bradenton and TONIGHT he will play at The Blue Rooster in Sarasota! Don’t miss out on a great show!
