Rock was alive and well at the sold out show at the Mid-Florida Amphitheatre show on Wednesday night! The last time Dave Grohl and company came to Tampa was September 11, 2005, and the Amalie Arena was the St. Pete Times Forum! Times have changed, but good hard rock and roll is always in style, just ask the fans!

Skipper’s Smokehouse in Tampa recently hosted the Allman Goldflies Band. An Allman relative and a former Allman Brother’s bass player, I was curious to see what this was all about. Singer/songwriter Gary Allman is an Allman cousin. His father was a cousin of Gregg’s father. He met Gregg a few times over the years but did not know him well. Gary has been doing music in some form or another since he was a teenager with a band called “Tumbling Dice” and was a guitar tech for the late Toy Caldwell of the Marshall Tucker Band.

Musician, soap star, movie star and author Rick Springfield brought his show to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on Thursday night. He is touring with the new record “The Snake King”, which was released in January. A bluesy rock hard edged record making some political statements is not what you expect from one of 80’s pop/rock favorites. Long before Justin Bieber, Springfield was a Teen Idol in his native Australia in the 70’s. He came to America and found musical success and then television success on the popular daytime drama General Hospital. In the 80’s, Dr. Noah Drake and Rick Springfield were almost one in the same. Rick left the show and devoted himself primarily to his first love music.

Celebrating Jewish Culture seeks to showcase Jewish culture and the diversity that exists in Jewish artistic expressions. The exhibit will feature works by Nadja Marks, Ellen Goldberg Tishman, Lori Charnow, Harry Samtur, and Janet Mishner. The art exhibit will be run from March 3 – April 13, 2018 at the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center. Opening night on Saturday, March 3 will include music and food related to Jewish culture. Tickets for the opening night celebration are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Advance tickets are available at www.fogartyville.org.

Can you hear it? The thunder of thousands of people descending upon Sarasota, some coming by car, most coming by bike, but all returning to the place where it all began. Thunder By The Bay is returning home with a new date, new venue, and renewed efforts to retain its status as a premiere motorcycle festival in the nation. They are celebrating a huge milestone this year, their 20th anniversary! The masses are coming and they are bringing their tourist dollars to infuse Sarasota and the surrounding area with an economic boost and will be providing crucial funding for Suncoast Charities for Children, for whom the event directly benefits. Thunder By The Bay is one of the largest festivals Sarasota has hosted in the past, and by all accounts, this year is going to be a record-breaker.

Be Sweet! Turn on theHeat! is a benefit to help the Whisper n Thunder EREZ fund, which provides heat for poorer Native Americans in the United States and Canada in the form of firewood, propane and/or electricity. The event will feature an art auction, art show, and potluck dinner in addition to entertainment by Frank Silverhawk, John Allen James, Suzanne ‘Raincrow’ Geyer and Joelle Clark. Sadly, some Native Americans freeze to death every winter, because they have no heat for their home/shelter.

It’s not often that two cities are able to collaborate on a regionally popular event, let alone one. For those in civil service jobs or those donating their time and talents to various charitable causes, the red tape encountered trying to arrange a large event can be daunting. The 4th Annual Bradenton Area River Regatta will take place on February 3rd, and make no mistake, this year’s festival promises to be a shining example of how Palmetto and Bradenton are harmoniously capitalizing on anticipated crowds nearing 100,000.
