Is it just me or does the time after Labor Day just seem to drag on with rain and more rain? It seems like things to do in the Sarasota and Bradenton area doesn’t start revving up until mid-October or early November. Welcome to August! Leaving July and entering August means one thing for most of us—Back to School. Yes, this has been one quick summer. I remember when August was all yours as a kid, the last month of freedom before Labor Day which was the signal that school was beginning. Now, kids are out of school before Memorial Day and back in weeks ahead of Labor Day, thus seeming to shorten the time spent away from the books. For parents, a return to school means many things. First, and an obvious foremost, kids will be doing their own thing during the day, away from you and your home. Perhaps this makes your heart twang in a sad way as the uncertainty of a new routine awaits. Or, if you’re a seasoned parental unit, maybe you are counting down the days until you have your freedom and sanity back. It’s o.k., we’ve all been there.

Like a flash, the holidays are upon us. Is it me, or does the ticking of time take on an exponential rate as the years roll by? It seems like last week was Labor Day and Halloween was just yesterday, but, alas, the magical, sparkling days of the winter holidays are arriving. Knowing the time you will spend with family and friends is precious beyond reason, it’s important to choose special events and destinations to be the foundation for this year’s merrymaking. Gorgeous setting right on Sarasota Bay, where the purplish hues of a sunset sky will be the perfect background for a tropical Christmas card? Check. Broadway-style show where the hits of the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s spring to life and warm your heart with nostalgic memories? Check. Sarasotans, assemble your group and make plans for a one-of-a-kind evening of music and memories as Decades Rewind returns to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on November 17.
