WSLR is Growing Roots in the Rosemary District Sunday, April 22, 5-9pm 

If you haven’t heard the news yet – WSLR is GROWING ROOTS in the Rosemary District!  WSLR is buying the property at 525 Kumquat Court, taking over the operation of the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center, the publication of the Critical Times quarterly newspaper, the maintenance of the online Activist Calendar and the scheduling of Activist Tuesdays. 

WSLR Presents Indian Classical/World Fusion Concert

WSLR proudly presents a very special concert event featuring Selva Ganesh, the Legendary Percussionist & Kanjira Maestro, with Rajib Karmakar on Sitar and Shankh Lahiri(Tabla) from the band ‘WAHH’. The first half of the event will be a Traditional Indian Classical performance followed by the WAHH World Fusion band. The concert will take place on Saturday, March 24 at 8pm at the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center. Tickets are $15 in advance/$18 day of show. Advance tickets are available at www.wslr.org.

WSLR Fifth Annual Cigar Box Festival in Sarasota

WSLR’s Fifth Annual Cigar Box Festival on Saturday, November 25th will feature performances by JPSoars and the Red Hots, John Nickel and David Smash. Cigar Box and other folk art vendors will also be participating. Doors open at 2:30pm for a cigar box guitar building workshop, followed by a “how to play a cigar box” workshop. There is an additional charge for the workshops (see below).

Fogartyville at WSLR- Madera Fina Brings Tropical Sounds to Sarasota

The singer-songwriter Abraham Dorta and percussionist Delvin López give life to the Afro-Caribbean music duo Madera Fina that demonstrates the wide range of genres that unfold in the Puerto Rico independent music scene. In the hand of Abraham’s guitar mastery, Madera Fina blends a broad amalgam of tropical styles including bossa nova, classical and Caribbean styles. 

WSLR is Ready for 100! Targets Whole Foods Market 5% Giving Day to Solar Expansion

WSLR is Ready for 100!  Just last week the Sarasota City Commission unanimously agreed to set a goal to transition Sarasota to 100 percent renewable energy sources joining the Sierra Club’s Ready for 100 campaign. 
To show support for this initiative, WSLR will target proceeds from its Whole Foods Market 5% Giving Day on Tuesday, June 20th to solar energy expansion.  Station Manager David Beaton has been a driving force behind WSLR’s conversion to solar energy.  Beaton says, “Solar is the energy for today and the future –  clean, reliable, and affordable. What better way to power Sarasota’s people-powered community radio station?”

Steve Arvey Jazz Sessions at WSLR- Fogartyville June 5th

Steve Arvey’s jazz sessions began in 2012 at the old Ocean Blues in Sarasota and moved to Monday Nights at the Blue Rooster in 2013.   Now that the Blue Rooster has closed on Mondays for the summer, Arvey is trying the Jazz Sessions at a new venue – the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center, 525 Kumquat Court.  

Bob Dylan’s Birthday BASH at WSLR

Now that Bob Dylan has won the Nobel Prize for Literature (2016) – the first musician to win the award –WSLR decided it was time to pay tribute to the enigmatic songwriter. Multiple bands will pay tribute including Ship of Fools, Steve Arvey with Rebecca Byrd and Roy Handcuff (WSLR’s very own Mark Zampella, Kid Red, Paul Louis and Scott Blum).

WSLR Hosts Prince Tribute with the NEXXLevel Band

Prince, the songwriter, singer, and consummate showman, died last year on April 20 at the age of 57. A seven-time Grammy winner, Prince had Top 10 hits with the songs “Little Red Corvette,” “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Kiss” and “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World”.
