The Lion King, the World’s #1 Musical, has clawed its way to Sarasota after premiering 22 years ago on Broadway! The Broadway production has grossed over a BILLION dollars, the highest grossing of all time. An incredible feat, but not too surprising considering the material they have to work with.

The audience poured into Van Wezel Performing Arts Center on Valentine’s Eve to hear soul singer Michael Bolton sing his hits. Single ladies and couples made up the majority of the crowd on a chilly night in Sarasota. At 65, Bolton is celebrating 50 years in the music business and a birthday on February 26th.

It was a “love fest” last night! One of my favorite performers of all time shared the love over and over at the Van Wezel.

First of all, I have to start out by telling you, the reader of this article, that I am a die-hard Seinfeld fan. Yes, I have seen all the Seinfeld episodes and all the Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee as well as many of Jerry’s stand-up specials and movies. Yes, I belong to Seinfeld Facebook groups and I follow Jerry and his wife Jessica on social media. Yes, I am biased when it comes to Seinfeld. Maybe because I love New York and Jerry IS New York! I spent years staying home on Thursday nights in the 90’s to watch “my show”! You will not get a negative review here. I even own Jerry’s SeinLanguage book that was a New York Times best seller back in 1993. I brought the book along hoping I could try to get it signed after the show. Yes, a total Seinfeld nerd.

Musician, soap star, movie star and author Rick Springfield brought his show to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on Thursday night. He is touring with the new record “The Snake King”, which was released in January. A bluesy rock hard edged record making some political statements is not what you expect from one of 80’s pop/rock favorites. Long before Justin Bieber, Springfield was a Teen Idol in his native Australia in the 70’s. He came to America and found musical success and then television success on the popular daytime drama General Hospital. In the 80’s, Dr. Noah Drake and Rick Springfield were almost one in the same. Rick left the show and devoted himself primarily to his first love music.

Tony Bennett is an American treasure. He was Frank Sinatra’s favorite singer, Lady Gaga has a tattoo honoring him, he has sung for 11 U.S. Presidents, has 20 Grammys including lifetime achievement and is still playing to audiences at age 91!

Jackson Browne, master songwriter, storyteller and activist played Van Wezel Performing Arts Center for the first time to a sold-out crowd and the Sarasota Police were in attendance in the show’s pit. Browne was on the last two shows of his solo tour when there was a threat made against his show on Tuesday night in Orlando. Security in both Orlando and SRQ were beefed up. The musician started the show off by thanking the Sarasota Police for keeping things safe.
