The annual Bradenton Blues Festival is only seven weeks away and has created quite a name for itself in the blues community. Known for consistent sellout crowds and stimulating the local economy, the festival draws thousands of attendees from across the state, country, and globe. The blues weekend kicks off with a free Blues Appetizer concert on Friday, Nov. 30, the Bradenton Blues Festival on Dec. 1, and the Blues Brunch on Dec. 2, 2018. Now in its seventh year, the Bradenton Blues Festival has put Bradenton on the map as a hub for the blues. Blues musicians, like Doug Deming from Detroit, MI, are moving to the area, Blues Music Magazine is located in Bradenton, and blues live-music venues like Blue Rooster are at capacity nearly every evening.
Blues guitarist/vocalist Mike Zito recently won the 2018 Rock Blues Artist of the Year at the BMA’s! He is a solo artist as well as a co-founder of the Royal Southern Brotherhood band. He is no stranger to the Tampa Bay Area! He has played Skipper’s Smokehouse and the Tampa Bay Blues Festival! Steve Arvey’s jazz sessions began in 2012 at the old Ocean Blues in Sarasota and moved to Monday Nights at the Blue Rooster in 2013. Now that the Blue Rooster has closed on Mondays for the summer, Arvey is trying the Jazz Sessions at a new venue – the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center, 525 Kumquat Court.

I was so enthralled and gratified to be sitting about 10 ft. away from Lauren Mitchell and Mike Hensley, (more respectfully known as “Mike the Professor”) who were playing at the Blue Rooster last night. The atmosphere was perfect…from the sublime “low” lighting to the acoustics, perfect is the word that comes to mind.
We had a beer and some great fried green tomatoes and macaroni and cheese…good comfort food prepared, as we used to say, “so well that it made you wanna slap yo’ mama”! So the mix was great food, superlative entertainment, and an ambience that was so laid back and perfect that I felt like I was experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
