Ode to the MOMS

This is a shout out to all the mothers of middle schoolers.  You know who you are, and can fondly recall the adventures your once tiny infant has taken you on.  Late night feedings, cuddles, sickness, and caring for another left you depleted most of those early years.  A lack of showers, time with friends, and time to be alone were all a part of it, yet you yearn for those days again.  You think of how your babies transformed into toddlers, little examples of the best of humanity mixed with tantrums, and teething and potty training.

Two Paws Up! Dog-Friendly Dining in Bradenton

Now that the weather is a bit cooler, it’s time to get the dogs out for what I tell them are ‘adventures.’ I was on the hunt for outdoor dining destinations where my Chihuahuas Rico and Babi and I could enjoy a leisurely meal outdoors complete with water and an occasional scrap for the excited but patient pups. Pizza crust ranks right up there with steak on my fur-kids’ faves.

A New Spot for Parties In Sarasota

If you’re seeking a different spot to host a birthday, wedding shower, company dinner or other special occasion, the folks at Creekside Trader Gift Shop at Phillipi Creek Village have a new opportunity.

I LOVE the LOVE in this Town!

This town never ceases to amaze me.  Our Gulf Coast is a marvelous place to live.  Fabulous outdoor activities, the Gulf of Mexico, awesome restaurants, superb live entertainment, arts, culture and so much more.

Flying High at Treeumph! Adventure Course

Is it just me or does it seem that average people are tapping into their inner athletes and now everybody is a 5K runner?  Whereas zip-lining and obstacle courses were once reserved for those graced with athletic prowess, agility, and bravery, now everybody is getting in on the action.   No longer are we accepting that age or body size should put limitation on us, and instead, the opposite seems to be happening.

What 70 Means

A great story for folks living in FL, by Life in the Boomer Lane’s Renee Fisher!  For thousands of years, people didn’t know what it meant to be 70-years-old. Large, surly animals, rotted teeth, and the plague were all standing by to end life well before that magic number.

Nostalgia and Neon At the 80th Annual Sarasota County Fair

A fried Snickers bar was probably the furthest thing from the minds of the Founding Fathers of the Sarasota County Agricultural Fair.  Midways with glowing neon lights and rides twirling faster than the eye can follow and comfort foods including fried Twinkies, wispy cotton candy, and sausages on a stick defined a new culinary category known affectionately as “fair food” could hardly be on the minds of early fairgoers.  But history and flair combine once again for the Sarasota County Agricultural Fair which is celebrating its 80th birthday this year.

Skinny’s Place, A Local INSTITUTION On HOLMES BEACH

This story is from May, 2015.  After enjoying a morning in the sun and the awesome beach last Saturday, Laura and I headed across the street to Skinny’s Place.  This classic restaurant is an Old Florida tradition.  There is nothing fancy about Skinny’s!  They have been doing it the same way at the same location since 1952….yes, that is a long time.

Leap Year Anyone?

Along with a major election this year, to many people the big news is that 2016 is also delivering a leap year.  That’s right, go ahead and schedule your appointments for that elusive 29th day of February; it’s really happening.  Statistically, there are nearly 5 million people on the planet who were born on February 29th, and about 200,000 of those reside in the United States.   The odds of being born on Feb. 29 are approximately 1 in 1461 so you may not know anyone born on this day.   And if that is the case, allow me to introduce myself as a member of the leap year baby class of 1968, celebrating birthday number 12 on the 29th.

Sarasota Braces for an Awesome Weekend

February is a magical time in Florida!  There’s something gratifying about going out shorts, t-shirts, and flip flops to do what we need to on the weekends, when our northern friends are having to don protective winter gear just to check the mail.

Exploring the Majestic Myakka River State Park

A day spent at Myakka River State Park provides a multitude of activities designed to make it well worth the short drive to get there.  An overhead canopy walk, which is a fun way to view the goings-on below, gives visitors a bird’s eye view of native Florida hammocks, marshes, flatwoods and prairies.
