Grieving and the Holiday Season

The Holidays are a time of cheer and celebration, an annual milestone which we mark the passage of time from one year to the next. We celebrate with parties and gifts, food and fellowship. For those who have lost a loved one, the holidays take on a more somber tone, and grief can come quickly and drain the joy out of this most festive time of year.

It’s OK to not be OK.

Sharing Less This Holiday Season (The Twelve Days of my Facebook Feed!)

Trying to digest the barrage of information that comes out of Facebook feels like having to alphabetically sort every word from Webster’s Dictionary after they have been individually cut and scattered everywhere by a gigantic fan. I don’t know what to do with it all. By definition, “information” means “facts provided about someone or something.” Perhaps, “information” isn’t quite the word to describe what we get out of logging on and checking in. It’s usually with tongue-in-cheek that we validate our points by saying “I saw it on Facebook.”

3 Easy Ways to have a Happier and Greener Holiday

America is a consumer nation, there is no doubt about that. There is no other time of the year that this fact is more obvious than during the holidays. We all pretty much know that Americans will spend an average of $900 extra dollars this season, but did you know we will generate 25 million pounds of extra garbage between Thanksgiving and New Year’s? That’s in addition to normal monthly household garbage. No wonder we feel the need to leave a 12 pack of beer atop the pile of boxes and bags of wrapping paper heaped up on our curb on the first garbage day after Christmas. A few of the stats jumped out at me, and I’ve come up with some alternatives that can not only keep some cash in your pocket, but will go a long way to keeping our garbage men and the planet happy.

Let the Holiday Weekend Begin

As we head into the 4th of July weekend, thoughts of barbeques, beach gatherings, and lightning-fast boats are on the minds of locals who are also celebrating the cherished freedoms that being an American affords.  Raising a toast to “Old Glory” is a must as we watch with patriotic pride as her stars and stripes gently sway in the wind, reminding us that this flag is a symbol of hope to so many.  Our founding fathers fought so that we may enjoy the liberties that our country provides.  In an age where the threat of terrorism, oppressed people and political divisiveness seem to be the norm, let’s give thanks and feel pride for the land of the free and the home of the brave and look to a bright and hopeful future.
