Is Florida Becoming the Country’s Largest Parking Lot?

| Sande Caplin |

Remember the day when you could drive from Sarasota to Bradenton in about 15 minutes.  Or, how about the short drive from Venice, FL to North Port, FL under 20 minutes.  For that matter every destination by car in the state of Florida has become a challenge.

The simple explanation is too many cars, too many people and not enough roads!  Everywhere I drive in the Florida Suncoast, I sit in traffic.  Main roads like I75 or I95 are overcrowded with constant stop and go traffic.  State Road 70 and 64 are nightmares during rush hour.  And forget about using US41 in the Sarasota-Bradenton area.  Construction and more construction.  And if you’re heading to the Orlando area, I4 is a nightmare.

Yes, the “season” for out-of-state visitors is in full bloom!  We love our “snowbirds” because they bring so much business into the state during the season.  Many of the “locals” (all year-round folks) tell me that they hardly go out during the season.  Going out to dinner for a local is a bit scary!  They go food shopping very early to beat the crowds and just enjoy straying in!

Get my point!  It’s time for the politicians and decision-makers to re-think the expansion projects that they have approved.  If you think it’s overcrowded now, I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like in Florida in the next couple of years.
