Break out the tie-dye and hula hoops for WSLR’s 10th annual celebration of Jerry Garcia. Jerry Garcia was born on August 1, 1942, and lived to become one of the most famous counterculture icons of the 20th Century. Playing guitar and singing for his band, The Grateful Dead, as well as several others, Garcia took his hippie movement from the 60’s into the 90’s, inspiring the following of millions of long-haired, tie-dye t-shirted, carefree “Deadheads.” Musicians honoring the Dead this year at Very Merry Jerry Day will include the Ship of Fools, the Al Fuller Band, and Stumble Creek.
Ship of Fools is a five piece Grateful Dead tribute band. Formed in 2012 in Sarasota, Ship of Fools features soaring leads, driving rhythm and tight harmonies. The band performs improvisational rock and blues, blending folk, bluegrass, reggae, and traditional American music in a dynamic mix. Core members include Nate Howell on lead guitar, Turner Moore on mandolin and Ed Knaust on rhythm guitar.
Stumble Creek are some of the areas best pickers who have come together to create a fun, laid back acoustic /Americana sound. Band members include Heather Downie – Vocals, Guitar, Mandolin, Austin Kennedy – Vocals Guitar Mandolin, Tom Hicks – Voca
It seems like Al Fuller has always had a band. From the time he was young, he brought his playing skills to the foreground, and developed those special relationships it takes to create a band that works well, and works together. Rich MacDonald has been Al’s drummer for a number of years, and more recent addition, Burt Englesman, joined the Al Fuller Band around 5 years ago. Burt began playing bass in 1971, touring with the Gregg Allman Band. Moe Cates is a 5 string bass player, versatile in many styles.
Jamming and dancing are “grate”-ly encouraged! This is a family-friendly event, with kids’ activities and local vendors tabling. Attendees can bring their own chairs and t-shirts for tie-dying, but no coolers please. Come out and help us recreate the mood and celebrate the music of the Grateful Dead. Tickets are $12 in advance/$15 day of show; half-price admission for students and free for children 12 and under.
Tickets are available at www.wslr.org. For more information call WSLR at 941-894-6469.
