The Monkees Say Their Goodbyes to Clearwater
Monkeemania came to Ruth Eckerd Hall in 2021, with Micky Dolenz, 76, and Mike “Nez” Nesmith, 78, the two remaining Monkees, who are currently making their final journey on tour around the U.S. They are bidding adieu to all of us baby boomers who grew up watching them 55 years ago on Monday nights and Saturday mornings. The Monkees became so much more than a manufactured band for television. They became part of the 60’s, the Laurel Canyon scene, and were real fledging musicians more than anyone knew. Here’s a fun true fact – The Monkees records out-sold both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones in 1967! They made a movie “Head” written by Jack Nicholson. They became much more than a TV show!
Micky & Mike brought a 7-piece band that made it a family affair for them both. Micky’s sister singer and actress, Coco Dolenz, is singing background and harmony. Mike’s son Christian Nesmith plays guitar and has produced the album, “Dolenz sings Nesmith”, tunes that Mike has written and Micky has recorded. This show was sold out and there were many Monkee’s fans in various t-shirts of past tours and reunions from over the years. Davy, Peter, Mickey and Mike reminding us of many TV memories and music. This writer saw Davy, Micky, and Peter back in the 80’s at Busch Gardens in Tampa during one of the reunion tours. In 1986, they came to the Suncoast and played the Sarasota Fairgrounds on July 4th!
From “Last Train to Clarksville” to Carole King’s “Pleasant Valley Sunday”, it was great nostalgia to hear these songs again! A highlight was Micky singing “Goin’ Down”. Mike’s turn brought us, “What Am I Doin’ Hangin’ Round?” and “Papa Gene’s Blues”. In between songs, Mike and Micky would share stories about some of the songs and the banter was very entertaining. There was a short intermission before coming back and giving us some of the classics like ,”Daydream Believer” and the Neil Diamond penned “I’m a Believer”. A bittersweet farewell to childhood heroes.
Micky and Mike are on tour through mid-November. If you want to enjoy an evening of musical memories, don’t miss out! Check out monkees.com for all the info. As they said in their theme song all those years ago- “Hey, hey we’re the Monkees, you never know where we’ll be found. So you’d better get ready, we may be comin’ to your town”!
