Suncoast Post Interview with Kurt Kiehnle of K Rock and Jack’d Up Band

| Sande Caplin |

Few people have done more to promote Sarasota’s local music scene than Kurt “K Rock” Kiehnle. As the driving force behind the popular Jack’d Up Band, host of a growing podcast spotlighting musicians and industry professionals, and a passionate supporter of local charities and community events, Kiehnle has become a familiar face throughout the Suncoast.

His latest original single, “I Love Sarasota,” celebrates the city he proudly calls home while showcasing the energy, creativity, and community spirit that have defined his career. In this exclusive interview with Sande Caplin of The Suncoast Post, Kurt shares the story behind his music, the origins of the K Rock brand, his dedication to giving back, and what fans can expect next from one of Sarasota’s most recognizable entertainers.

Finding His Sound in Sarasota

1. For readers who may not know your story, tell us about your musical journey and how you became one of Sarasota’s most recognizable music personalities.

I fell in love with rock music at an early age and quickly became a devoted student of what’s now known as Classic Rock. Before long, I formed my first band as a lead singer. Eventually, I picked up a bass guitar, took lessons, and spent countless hours in the garage practicing until we were good enough to start playing in bars.

Years later, after moving to Sarasota, I was inspired by two local bands – Twinkle and The Verge – both of whom I was fortunate to eventually become friends with. That inspiration led me to start another band: Jack’D Up.

Building Jack’D Up into what it is today didn’t happen overnight. It took years of hard work, lower-paying gigs, lineup changes, and a lot of persistence. Looking back now, it’s incredibly rewarding to see that all the effort paid off.

2. How did the “K Rock” brand come to life, and what does it represent to you today?

In the 6th grade my basketball teammates gave me the nickname as I was always listening to and singing rock. There was a local FM radio station, WXRQ, also known as K Rock so it all came together. Today it sets me apart as it’s a unique nickname and represents my outgoing personality.

3. Jack’d Up Band has built a loyal following throughout the Suncoast. What do you think makes the band connect so well with audiences?

We are genuine people who put friendships and people first. We play radio friendly popular songs from the 80’s that people enjoy. We also keep it festive and don’t take ourselves seriously. We create a fun environment.

The band has also been part of community-minded local music moments before, including The Girls, Jack’d Up Band, Clancy’s Irish Pub, and Some Incredibly Generous Folks in Our Town.

I Love Sarasota

4. You recently released your new single, “I Love Sarasota.” What inspired you to write and record a song dedicated to Sarasota?

I always wanted to write this song from the minute I fell in love with the county. I also wanted it to be upbeat and danceable. Jump Up, Get It has always been a motto of mine. I like getting people fired up and excited.

5. What are some of the Sarasota landmarks, people, or experiences that influenced the lyrics of “I Love Sarasota”?

Palm trees are amazing to me as a New Yorker. I never tire looking at them. Siesta Key Beach sand is unique and amazing. Seeing dolphins and manatees up close is awesome. My fellow musicians inspire me to perform, create and entertain.

6. How has the reaction been so far from local residents, visitors, and fellow musicians who have heard the song?

So many people have told me they absolutely love it. It is spreading like wildfire right now.

The Suncoast Music Community

7. Sarasota has a thriving music scene. What makes this community special for musicians compared to other places you’ve performed?

The brotherhood, the fraternal feel. The friendships, the venue owners and GMs who treat bands well and of course the fans who support and appreciate local music.

That kind of local support is visible throughout the area, from long-running clubs to newer rooms featured in The Suncoast Post’s guide to the 25 Best Live Music Venues in Sarasota, Florida.

8. You’ve interviewed countless musicians and industry professionals on your podcast. What inspired you to launch the show?

I feel they all need a voice to be heard and recognized and appreciated. No one was offering this type of show, so I dove in. I also enjoy interviewing people and asking questions. I am a salesman by trade.

9. After talking with so many artists, what are some of the most valuable lessons you’ve learned about success in the music business?

Know the room, know the audience, play to your audience, treat every show like it’s your last, show appreciation to fans and choose band mates you like outside of music.

10. Is there a podcast guest or interview that particularly stands out as unforgettable, and why?

Several actually – Dana Lawrence, Twinkle, Frank Curcio to name a few.

11. How has social media changed the way local musicians promote themselves and connect with fans?

It is huge. It is a necessity. I advise all musicians to treat it as a business and work hard at it, like their performances.

12. What advice would you give a young musician in Sarasota who wants to build a career in music today?

Get with other like-minded musicians. Practice and rehearsal goes without saying. Get your performances tight and attend open mic nights and when it’s your turn – shine! Market yourself on social media and interact with fans.

Giving Back

13. Beyond performing, you’re known for organizing and supporting community fundraisers. Why is giving back so important to you?

I am blessed with a skill set of public speaking and organizing. I was raised to be a leader and a motivator. I’m motivated to make a difference, inspired by my mother who passed away twenty years ago.

14. Can you tell us about a fundraising event that had a particularly meaningful impact on the community?

The Blessings Bag Project is local and near and dear to my heart. We can all see the results of our efforts in the faces of the people who benefit.

The project has been part of the Suncoast charitable landscape for years, including this earlier story on Betsy Plante and the Blessing Bags Project.

Venues, Challenges and What’s Next

15. Sarasota is growing rapidly. How have you seen the local music scene evolve over the years?

There are more bands, more musicians, more talent. Less venues but still more here than in most places. 88 Live, Encore Live and Twisted Fork are three premium venues with pro sound that we especially like performing at.

16. What role do local venues play in helping musicians succeed, and are there any venues that have been especially supportive of your career?

All the venues that Jack’D Up perform at are loyal to us and vice versa. I believe it’s a partnership every time a band plays a venue. The goal is getting customers to attend, have fun, spend money, make memories.

17. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced as an independent musician and entrepreneur?

Keeping my energy high, staying focused, solving problems, dealing with Florida weather.

18. Looking back, is there a performance or career milestone that you’re most proud of?

Opening for my idols – Blue Oyster Cult at Thunder by the Bay in Sarasota in 2025.

Thunder By The Bay remains one of Sarasota’s signature music-and-charity traditions, with the 2026 festival recently raising $310,000 for the community.

19. What exciting projects, events, recordings, or collaborations do you have planned for the remainder of 2026?

Three more new, original songs will be recorded this summer.

20. If someone has never seen Jack’d Up Band perform, what can they expect when they walk through the door for their first show?

A fun evening of great songs to eat, drink and dance to. Fantastic musicianship and talented performers. All your favorite radio hits from the 80’s to today.
