“We’re putting the band back together.”
Over a year after Greg Poulos and Chris Guertin have been away from Kettle of Fish while pursuing other endeavors, their lives and talents have circled around back to rejoin the band. And if that wasn’t enough, drummer Pat McDonald, formerly with the Charlie Daniels Band, is joining the band as Rick Andre moves back to his family in Rhode Island.
Greg Poulos is known for his guitar work with Freddie King, Chris Anderson (the Anderson-Poulos Band), Dan Electro, and for many years locally with the Venturas. His blues work is unparalleled in the Suncoast area, culminating in his solo album from 2008, Angels from Hazard. Chris Guertin has played bass locally with the Big Kahuna Band, as well as touring worldwide as the musical director on Princess Cruises. Pat McDonald has worked with many artists including Tanya Tucker, Victor Wooten, Leon Russell and Reese Wynans, and was the drummer for Charlie Daniels Band for nearly 20 years before relocating to the Florida Suncoast for his family.
Kettle of Fish has been a coop of Suncoast Florida musicians led by Dana Lawrence and has won the Sarasota Herald Readers Poll (4 of the last 5 years), the Bradenton Times Best Band (2 of last 3 years) and continues to play hundreds of gigs per year.
What comes around goes around, and Kettle of Fish will be back around to local venues and festivals again, starting at the Blue Rooster in Sarasota on June 13 and June 19.
From the website
Kettle of Fish plays festiblues, the kind of festival music that features blues, soul and funk with the energy of rock n roll. They make old songs new again, and their originals sound like classics. Kettle is one of the hottest live acts in Southwest Florida, headlining to thousands, and opening for such acts as Eddie Money, Marshall Tucker, Elvin Bishop, Dickey Betts (three times, and he even called the band “intimidating”) and many more playing originals and deep track covers.
Kettle has been led by singer and principal songwriter Dana Lawrence since its inception in 2001. Current members include Greg Poulos returning on guitar (formerly with the Freddie King Band, the Venturas, Rock Bottom). Chris Guertin returns to bass duties and vocals after a hiatus. Guertin was a member of the Big Kahuna Band and Musical Director on Princess Cruises. Pat McDonald on drums (toured with Charlie Daniels for 20 years). Robin Swenson on keys (Four Seasons, Aretha Franklin). Other honorary members include Thorson Moore, Kevin Miller, Bob Dielman and Lei Stanhope on guitars, Garrett Dawson on drums/percussion, Andy Wallace or Matthew Frost on keys, Jimmie Fadden (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) on drums and harmonicas and other friends from the road.
Special events have included headlining the GABBA Festival at the great Cox Capital Theater in Macon, Georgia, headlining the Myakka River Blues Fest (twice), Wanee Fest in Live Oak, Sarasota Blues Fest, Venice Blues Fest, Suncoast Blues Fest, Gulfcoast Rhythm & Ribfest, Bradenton Blues Fest and numerous regional festivals.
Kettle of Fish members also have a side project doing the music of Tom Petty. FreeFallin Florida has headlined and played several Seafood Festivals in Southwest Florida. facebook.com/freefallinflorida
