Karyn Denham, An Impressive Performance
I have seen Karyn Denham perform at several “Ladies Sing The Blues Events.” At each event she was awesome. I never had the experience of watching Karyn do a 3 hour show like I did last night at the Swordfish Grill in Cortez. Karyn was a “showstopper.” Accompanied by her band, “The Uprights,” they had the great crowd hoppin & boppin! Several tables asked owner Mark Bartlett “when is the fabulous band coming back?”
I have a special affection for school teachers. My daughter and dear friend (wife from another life, Sandy) are both teachers. Karyn is a single mom and a teacher. Knowing first hand what a tough job it is being a teacher, I am amazed that Karyn is able to juggle her schedule with work, being a mom and an entertainer!
Last night was inspiring. Karyn’s band consisted of Don Cox on bass, Dave Simmons, drums, Allan Cook on sax and flute and Rick Fass on guitar. Josh Nelms also plays with the band! These guys are super talented. We’re talking top notch players here! The music was ….well “over the top!” Jump Jive and Wail, Johnny Got a Boom Boom, VooDoo Woman, In The Basement, Walking After Midnight, Baby I Love You, At Last and more. Song after song had the crowd up and dancing. Everyone was singing along with the Karyn.
Karyn is a very gracious lady. Whenever we mention her in one of our stories, she always sends an email back with a “thank you.” Her smile is contagious and her singing is very special. What stuck with me most last night (besides the show) was when I asked her about her 2 kids. Karyn had a smile from ear to ear. She is so excited that her son’s high school marching band will be performing at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. How special is that?
You’re going to be seeing more of Karyn & the Uprights. Mark Bartlett announced last night that they will be doing several more shows at the Swordfish Grill. Watch their website for the dates…. www.swordfishgrillcortez.com. You can follow Karyn on Facebook.
Congratulations, Karyn. It was a pleasure to watch you perform last night and knowing what else you do everyday is just so impressive!
