Errol Rackipov, one of the world’s top jazz vibraphonists and marimbists, is scheduled to appear in concert at the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center on March 15 at 7pm.
The program, “Cool Vibes,” is part of Modern Marimba’s inaugural concert season. Tickets are $15 for members, $18 for the general public. Student tickets are half-price and kids under 12 are free. Advance tickets are available online at wslr.org or by calling 1-800-838-3006.
Errol Rackipov grew up in Sofia, Bulgaria engulfed by the extraordinarily rich folk music of his country. There, he received classical musical training at the Music Academy in Sofia. He moved to the United States in 1991 to study jazz with Gary Burton at the Berklee College of Music, and now resides in South Florida where he is on faculty at the University of Miami and Florida International University.
Rackipov will present jazz music that pushes into new unexplored territories: the strong influence of Bulgarian folk music in the use of odd meters, modal harmonic colors and rhythm changes to create contrasting moods. His music always keeps listeners attentive and involved, sparing them the trivialities of “packaged” smooth jazz and easy listening pieces.
