‘Get The Bunk Out’ Tour Kicks Off at Fogartyville
Get The Bunk Out, a new show based on the writings of Will Rogers, will premiere at Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center on August 19 at 8pm. The event will also kickoff a 24-state cross-country motorcyle tour for Steve McAllister, a Sarasota native who was first cast to play Rogers at the Players production of The Will Rogers Follies in 2017. The tour will include visits to a number of Will Rogers memorials, culminating in a visit to his birthplace on his birthday, November 4.
After the Players’ production, McAllister produced his fourth one-man show, Will Rogers Revived, which received the “Humorist Award” at the 2018 Sarasolo Festival. While the original performance included topics such as taxes, debt, education, and finance, Get The Bunk Out focuses primarily on Rogers’ political humor, infused with original songs and poetry by McAllister.
The show gets its title from Rogers 1928 presidential campaign as the candidate for the Anti-Bunk Party. The satirical party was invented by Life magazine, a humor magazine at the time. After not receiving any electoral votes, Rogers stated that the party was merely “a hundred years ahead of times.” With the 2028 election only a few years away, McAllister says that the party is due for a revival. “I think it’s important for people to remember what Will had to say a hundred years ago,” says McAllister, “because it can offer a helpful perspective as we continue to make this a more perfect union. Since Will was a person who never met a man he didn’t like, I think he has something to teach us about making America like each other again.”
The performance of Get The Bunk Out, will begin at 8pm and doors open at 7:30pm. Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center is located at. 525 Kumquat Court. Admission is 10$ for adults and 5$ for students. Tickets can be purchased in advance HERE.
