Locals in the Manatee/Sarasota area got a real treasure of a show on February 10th with the appearance of Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dave Mason. Mason was inducted in the RRHOF in 2004 with his band, Traffic.
A co-founder of Traffic along with Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood, the band found success in the late 60’s with such albums as Mr. Fantasy and Traffic. Feelin’ Alright was a big hit for them as well as Joe Cocker and many other artists who have recorded the Mason penned tune.
Dave’s current tour “Traffic Jam” played a 2 hour show with a 15 minute intermission. Neel Performing Arts Center is a theater with great sound. Seating around 850, it is located on the grounds of SCF in Bradenton. Dave played the hits including “Mr. Fantasy”, “Feelin’ Alright” and that beautiful solo hit for Dave, the 70’s classic “We Just Disagree”. Dave’s band is first rate and includes Johnne Sambataro, Alvino Bennett and Tony Palter.
Dave has a history of playing with Hendrix and sat in on studio sessions with Jimi at Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village. A little known fact, Dave played on the track of Jimi’s version of “All Along the Watchtower” which was recorded in London and written by Bob Dylan. Dave and the band concluded the show with “Watchtower” which was an incredible ending to a show that was top shelf.
It is great to see national acts like Dave Mason coming to the Neel Performing Arts Center. It is such an intimate comfortable venue. They will be hosting another evening of rock with the Marshall Tucker Band on April 5th! Opening for Marshall Tucker will be local favorite, The Billy Rice Band!
