Daryl Hall Brings His House to Clearwater’s BayCare Sound
Back in 2007, Daryl Hall of the best-selling duo of Daryl Hall & John Oates came up with an idea to bring his music to the Internet from his home in upstate New York. He started inviting his famous musical friends and new artists to jam on his show. He brought in food cooking segments as the show grew in popularity. Hall has now brought his show on the road with Brit synth-pioneer, Howard Jones for a fall tour. Howard appeared on “Live From Daryl’s House” last year, which you can catch on YouTube The great Daryl’s House band is backing both artists for an evening of hits and music including from Daryl’s new album “D”, which was recorded in the Bahamas with the Eurythmics Dave Stewart.
Opening the show, Howard walks on stage dressed in a black glitter jacket and multi-colored sequined shirt. He opens with “Pearl In A Shell” and his catchy 1983 hit, “New Song”. Jones is clearly having a good time with the band. He brings the audience together for a sing-along with his 1986 megahit, “No One Is To Blame.” Howard tells us that he is a huge fan of Steely Dan and Donald Fagan. He and the band give us a rousing version of Donald Fagan’s “I.G.Y.” from Fagan’s “Nightfly” album. The Howard Jones fans in the audience got most everything they would want to hear with Jones closing out his hour-long set with “Everlasting Love” and the upbeat “Things Can Only Get Better.”
Daryl walked onstage straight to the keyboard to sing the upbeat “The Whole World’s Better” from his “D” album. Next up, he switched to guitar to perform his 1986 solo hit “Dreamtime” from his “Three Hearts In The Happy Ending Machine” album. For the casual listener, Daryl has a collection of amazing solo work outside of H&O hits. Next during the show, he said he knew what the audience wanted and headed to the piano to give the crowd some of those hits with “Kiss On My List”, “Private Eyes” and “Rich Girl” which of course turned into an audience a sing-along. Daryl plays one of the best tunes from the new album “Walking In Between Raindrops”, a soulful song. Next on the setlist was “I’m In A Philly Mood” a tribute to his hometown with a nod to the late Teddy Pendergrass from Hall’s stellar 1993 “Soul Alone” album. Check this record out, it is some of his best work along with the 1996 “Can’t Stop Dreamin” album, wish he would have done a tune from it like the great number “Cab Driver.”
From the H&O album “Voices” he performed the massive hit “Everytime You Go Away” which was recorded by Paul Young in 1985, but this is a Hall written and recorded song from 1980! This was followed by the love letter “Sara Smile.” Closing the set out with dance in the aisles, “I Can’t Go For That” with Charlie Dechant on the famous saxophone riff. The rest of the band is Klyde Jones on bass, Shane Theriot on guitar, Brian Dunne on drums, Porter Carroll on percussion and Greg Mayo on keyboards.
For the encore Howard and Daryl play some tunes together ala “Live From Daryl’s House”. Along with Daryl’s hit “One on One” and Howard’s “What is Love”, they jam on a cover of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes “Bad Luck” which is a great tribute to TSOP and the original lead vocals were sung by Teddy P. They closed out the show with “You Make My Dreams Come True” a perfect finale song. A fun show of some of the best music from two uber talented musicians. There are a few shows left including a stop at Nashville’s musical church the Ryman Auditorium before the holidays. Check out all info at HERE.
