Wilson-Wood Foundation Champions Generational Impact with Grant to Parenting Matters

Parenting Matters, a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening families through parenting education and support, has received a generous $15,000 grant from the Wilson-Wood Foundation of Nokomis, Florida. The funding will help expand the organization’s Parent Partner Program, an evidence-based, in-home initiative that empowers parents with the tools and guidance to raise healthy, thriving children.

Founded in 1981, the Wilson-Wood Foundation has long supported programs that create multi-generational impact. In 2024 alone, it funded 30 local organizations, with a focus on initiatives that build strong families and resilient communities. This latest grant continues that mission by directly supporting Parenting Matters’ flagship program, which provides weekly in-home sessions tailored to the unique challenges parents face.

Transforming Lives, One Family at a Time

Parenting Matters’ Parent Partner Program is more than a parenting class — it’s a lifeline. Through compassionate support and structured guidance, families gain confidence, improve communication, reduce stress, and foster positive behaviors in children. The program is delivered in both English and Spanish and is often offered free of charge.

One powerful example of the program’s impact is the story of Marielisa Leyva, a mother who was overwhelmed with anxiety and fear. With support from a Parenting Matters educator, she learned how to rebuild her confidence, leave an unhealthy relationship, and become the strong parent her children needed. “Me being well helps them be well,” she says, summarizing the ripple effect of family wellness.

Words from Leadership

“Parenting is one of the most important and challenging roles anyone can take on,” said Katie Becker, Executive Director of Parenting Matters. “Thanks to the Wilson-Wood Foundation’s generosity, we can bring this life-changing program to more families across our community.”

Thomas A. Faessler, President of the Wilson-Wood Foundation, echoed this sentiment: “The Parent Partner Program empowers parents to build healthier, stronger families. Supporting this program means investing in children’s futures and honoring our co-founder’s vision.”

Susan Wood, the Foundation’s Secretary/Treasurer, added, “We are proud to support an organization that aligns perfectly with our goal of creating generational change through family support.”
