Where the Deer and the Antelope Play in Florida

| Sheri Nadelman |

Being bird nerd adjacent to my Artie definitely has its perks.  Often, I’m presented with the most wonderfully and unexpected photo ops.  This is the story of one such occasion.

My Artie was out birding in Highlands County in an area that is known for Florida Scrub Jays and Crested Caracaras, when he spotted antelopes behind the gates of someone’s property.  This encounter not only piqued my interest, but prompted a subsequent visit so I could see for myself!

I did a little deep dive to find out about the property which is owned by Bill and Marsha Grigsby.

To my sheer delight, I found out that the property is known as Antler Pines, a 350-acre private game preserve in Sebring.  The Grigsby family resides and recently opened a brand-new beautiful event venue on the compound.  I spoke with Marsha who was kind enough to extend an invitation to my Artie and me to tour the property!

Beyond the gates of Antler Pines, there is an undeniable sense of tranquility.  Marsha and her assistant, Amanda, who is the event planner, greeted us like we were old friends!

The venue is Marsha’s brainchild.  Her background is in animal science.  Her passion for her faith and for nature have been driving forces.  She has always dreamed of sharing that passion in the form of a serene venue where people can come to celebrate and enjoy the natural beauty of the property.  Having her vision come to fruition is a thrill for her and her family.

The elegantly rustic reception building also has a huge patio which overlooks a beautiful pond and offers a versatile event space.  Marsha’s attention to detail includes several separate areas for bridal party accommodations, complete with a beautiful bridal suite and separate groom’s lounge!  There is even a well-appointed apartment where several guests can stay overnight!  (I’m thinking girls’ night!)  The reception hall can hold up to 299 guests.  A state-of-the-art catering kitchen and an in-house sound system ensure a perfect party atmosphere.

After touring the facility, Marsha drove us through the grounds where we were lucky enough to take photographs of the abundant wildlife where the deer and the antelope play.  (See what I did there?)  Antler Pines is home to several exotic species of deer including White Tail, Fallow, Antelope, Red Stag, Blackbuck and Axis.  There were also cows, beautiful Fox Squirrels, Great Horned Owls and countless birds.  I honestly felt like I was so far away from the never-ending construction and traffic that is plaguing much of our town, that I almost forgot that I was in Florida!  I really tried to contain my excitement, but admittedly I couldn’t help it.  Ok, maybe I didn’t try that hard!

As someone who has a deep appreciation for wildlife, Marsha is the epitome of grace and southern hospitality.  I am so grateful for having such a special experience.  Antler Pines checks all the boxes as an event destination that is close to civilization, yet it offers seclusion among the beauty of nature.  It is indeed a little slice of heaven.
