This Week’s “The Best of The Sarasota Post” – The Best Chef

Executive Chef and Proprietor of Mattison’s Restaurants and Catering, Paul Mattison, is not only a fabulous chef but, he is a very generous man.

Through his restaurants he has helped raise money for Niman Ranch Next Generation Scholarships, helped students grow healthy vegetables, hosted classes for Boys and Girls Clubs and Manatee Technical College, served on the board of All Faiths Food Bank and, through his Riverwalk Grille Restaurant, started a Round Up for Charity program, plus many more charitable events!



Paul grew up in New York and learned to cook and to grow a garden with his Italian grandmother, Esther, starting at 5 years old. She taught him to use the herbs they grew to enhance flavors in the food they cooked. While there he started cooking at a Greek restaurant, Symeon’s, when he was only 15. It was obvious that cooking was his passion, so he then went to the Culinary Institute of America (CIA).

Chef Paul helps kids grow gardens.After graduating he moved to Aspen, Colorado where he worked at Pinons Restaurant, honing his skills and then moved to Sarasota where he was Executive Chef and Proprietor of the Summerhouse Restaurant on Siesta Key. Soon after the Mattison’s Restaurants and catering were born.

His restaurants have received many awards: Florida Trend’s Golden Spoon Brand Award, Sarasota Herald Tribune’s Readers’ Choice Awards, Sarasota Magazine’s Best of the Best, SRQ Magazine’s Hot List, Creative Loafing’s Editor’s Choice Award, Bradenton Herald’s Readers’ Choice Awards, and many others.

Chef Paul wrote a book - "Chef: The Story and Recipes of Chef Paul Mattison".He wrote a book, “Chef: The Story and Recipes of Chef Paul Mattison” published in 2012 and dedicated to his grandmother, Esther, his family, his staff, and all the guests who have dined with him.

Chef Paul Mattison receiving The Sarasota Post 2019 "Person of the Year" award at Mattison's in Bradenton, FLPaul has received several national service awards for his community-based efforts such as culinary classes and demonstrations for charity organizations. He is happy to mentor young people and he is known for his generosity in his community.

Every year The Sarasota Post chooses a “Person of the Year” for an award. They look for someone special who stands out by their charity and ability to give back to their community. Last Wednesday The Sarasota Post was proud to present Chef Paul Mattison with their “Person of the Year” award for 2019. Congratulations and well deserved!
