The Unofficial Mayor of Cortez, Florida
Mookie isn’t just any Shih Tzu. He came into my life during a stormy season—both literally and figuratively. It was the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I was undergoing radiation treatments for prostate cancer. But when Mookie arrived, it was as if the sun peeked through the clouds. In just one week, Mookie was house-trained. In no time at all, we were inseparable.
Mookie wasn’t built for fame, but it found him anyway.
Whether greeting patrons at the Tiki at The Swordfish Grill and Cortez Kitchen or grabbing bacon bits from his bartender friends at Clancy’s Irish Sports Pub, Mookie turns heads. Tourists from around the globe snap selfies with him, and he greets each one like an old friend. Some swear he smiled for photos. Most just melt when they see him.
He isn’t just a local legend either—Mookie is a high-flying adventurer. With more than 70 flights under his tiny collar, he has crisscrossed the country in a carrier that has more miles on it than most rental cars. Flight attendants adore him. Fellow passengers swoon. TSA agents? Let’s just say even they couldn’t help but baby talk him through security.
And now, Mookie is in love.

No, not another pup, but two of the most beautiful, loving, intelligent young girls that I have ever met, Charlee and Nova. As many of you know, their mom, Sara was tragically killed last November by a drunk driver. Mookie met the girls last December, and the rest is history. Mookie and the girls are best friends. He has charmed his way into their hearts, bringing them joy, healing, and laughter whenever they are together. It amazes me how much fun they have together.
And if you ask anyone around Cortez, they’ll tell you: there’s a reason they call Mookie “Unofficial The Mayor of Cortez.”
