Spring training is in full swing and Monday was the first of several night games at George Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. The visiting team was the Philadelphia Phillies. The Yankees invited some of the cast members from Cirque du Soleil’s Volta to open the game by throwing the 1st pitch and singing the National Anthem! Volta is in town through March 18th at the Big Top at the Tampa Greyhound Track.
Lead vocalists Darius Harper and Camilla Backman sang a beautiful rendition of the anthem and acrobats Philippe Bélanger and Marie-Lee Guilbert, threw the 1st pitch with Marie standing on Phillippe’s head!
This was no doubt a first for a way to deliver that 1st Pitch to Yankee catcher Eric Kratz! They delighted and amazed the crowd with some extraordinary gymnastics. Volta had a tent on the 2nd level with giveaways and free photos for stopping by. The Yankees and Volta gave away some tickets to the show during the game to some excited fans. A great way to celebrate both Yankees spring training and Volta being in Tampa!
There have been some improvements to Steinbrenner Field since last season. A new outfield seating area makes a nice hangout area for fans on a first come first serve basis.
A smaller version of Yankee Stadium, Steinbrenner Field is a fun ballpark for a spring training game! For tickets and info go to www.yankees.com
