Standing Together: Suicide Advocacy and Support During in Suicide Prevention Month
September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to pause, reflect, and take action in our communities. Suicide remains one of the most pressing public health challenges of our time—and while statistics may feel overwhelming, they remind us why conversations about hope, resilience, and connection are so important.
The Numbers We Can’t Ignore
Here in Florida, suicide was the 12th leading cause of death in 2021, claiming over 3,300 lives. Before the pandemic, one Floridian died by suicide every three hours. For young people, the picture is especially alarming: suicide ranks as the third leading cause of death among those ages 15–24, and the second among those 25–34.
These numbers aren’t just data points—they represent loved ones, neighbors, co-workers, and friends right here on the Suncoast.
How We Can Make a Difference
The good news? Each of us has the power to be a lifeline for someone who may be struggling. You don’t need special training to help—you just need compassion and awareness.
- Recognize the signs: withdrawal, hopelessness, mood swings, or talk about being a burden.
- Start the conversation: gently ask, “I’ve noticed you seem down lately—how are you really doing?”
- Encourage professional help: offer to help with appointments or research resources together.
- Stay connected: check in with calls or texts. Small gestures matter more than we know.
- Know the crisis lines: calling or texting 988 connects you to the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline 24/7. Veterans can press 1, or text 838255 for immediate support.
When in doubt, remember: asking someone directly about suicide does not put the thought in their mind—it can often be the first step toward saving a life.
