Sarasota Ranks Among the South’s Best Places to Retire, National Travel Magazine Says

| Suncoast Post Staff |

Sarasota continues to strengthen its reputation as one of the South’s most desirable retirement destinations, earning a No. 6 ranking on a new list of the 10 Best Places to Retire in the South published by Travel + Leisure.

The January ranking places Sarasota firmly among top retirement markets across the region, led by Athens, Georgia, and followed by cities in Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama. Sarasota was the highest-ranked location in Florida, outperforming other popular retiree communities, including Lake Nona near Orlando and The Villages.

Why Sarasota Continues to Stand Out

According to Travel + Leisure writer Lydia Mansel, warm weather and financial considerations played a major role in shaping the rankings. Florida, Georgia, and Texas—all well represented on the list—remain attractive to retirees in part because they do not levy a state income tax.

Sarasota distinguishes itself further as the only Florida beach town to make the list. Its coastline remains one of its strongest draws, anchored by Siesta Beach, which was named the No. 1 beach in the United States in 2025 by TripAdvisor. The combination of powder-white sand, clear Gulf waters, and easy public access continues to attract retirees seeking an active coastal lifestyle.

Arts and culture are another defining factor. Sarasota is home to a nationally recognized arts scene that includes theaters, galleries, live music venues, and a robust calendar of festivals and community events—an appealing mix for retirees who want both relaxation and enrichment.

Healthcare Access Remains a Key Advantage

Access to quality healthcare was cited as another major consideration. Sarasota Memorial Hospital is frequently recognized among top hospitals nationwide, giving retirees confidence that advanced medical care is close to home.

Affordability and Market Realities

While Sarasota remains in high demand, affordability continues to influence retirement decisions. A November 2025 report from the Realtor Association of Sarasota and Manatee showed a median single-family home price of $457,495 in Sarasota County, with condo prices averaging $329,500. Though prices have risen in recent years, Sarasota still compares favorably to many coastal retirement markets nationwide.

A Proven Retirement Favorite

Sarasota’s appearance on national retirement rankings is nothing new. The city previously claimed top honors from U.S. News & World Report in both 2020 and 2022. More recently, it ranked No. 4 in the 2024–25 U.S. News retirement listings, underscoring its staying power despite increased demand and rising home prices following the pandemic-era migration surge.

Nearby Gulf Coast Communities Are Gaining Traction

Sarasota’s growing appeal is also lifting interest in surrounding Gulf Coast towns that offer a similar lifestyle at a more accessible price point. In December 2025, vacation rental platform HomeToGo singled out Englewood as the top destination for value-minded snowbirds.

The company pointed to Englewood’s laid-back coastal atmosphere, mild winter temperatures that often hover in the low 70s, and its calm Gulf waters as major draws. With uncrowded beaches and a slower pace of life, Englewood is increasingly seen as an attractive alternative for retirees and seasonal residents looking to enjoy Southwest Florida without Sarasota-level prices.

The Bottom Line

With its blend of coastal beauty, cultural depth, quality healthcare, and tax-friendly climate, Sarasota continues to rank among the South’s elite retirement destinations. For retirees seeking sunshine without sacrificing sophistication, Sarasota remains a compelling—and proven—choice.
