Sarasota County Lifeguard Honored with National Medal of Valor for Heroic Gulf Rescue
Sarasota County Fire Department Lifeguard Mariano Martinez has been awarded the prestigious National Medal of Valor by the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) and named Lifeguard of the Year by the Florida Beach Patrol Chiefs Association. These top honors recognize his courageous off-duty rescue of a family caught in a dangerous rip current on June 22, 2024, along the Gulf Coast.
The USLA National Medal of Valor is the highest recognition a lifeguard can receive. It is awarded to individuals who voluntarily risk their own lives to an extraordinary degree to save another person—or who make the ultimate sacrifice while attempting to do so. Martinez’s actions that day were nothing short of heroic.
In addition, Martinez was named Florida’s Lifeguard of the Year, a title determined by votes from beach patrol chiefs throughout the state. The award highlights exceptional dedication, skill, and service within Florida’s beach safety community.
Both honors were presented to Martinez on May 17, in recognition of his bravery, professionalism, and commitment to public safety.
“Mariano is an outstanding member of our community who exemplifies selfless service and consistently shows his passion, going above and beyond for our residents and visitors,” said Sarasota County Fire Department Lifeguard Operations Group Chief Rick Hinkson. “We are proud to have him on our team and grateful to the USLA and the Florida Beach Patrol Chiefs Association for recognizing his incredible efforts.”
Martinez’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of the critical role lifeguards play in protecting lives on Florida’s beaches, both on and off duty.
