Our Community Lost a Very Unique and Special Lady

| Sande Caplin |

We lost a pillar of our community last week.  She was unique in so many ways!  Ellen Scott was loved by so many people and touched so many lives!  Right until the end she kept her positive attitude. The tributes to Ellen on social media said it so well.  Everyone had a different perspective of her, but we would all agree that she kept everyone on their toes.

Whenever there was a fundraiser, Ellen was there to help whether it be for hurricane relief, support for Ukraine, helping the homeless, raising money for local charities and more.  I can still picture her selling raffle tickets at various events around town.  She had a way of getting money out of you!  She was relentless.

Her love for her family was never ending.  Her love and affection for her kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren always put a smile on her face.  She had a very special relationship with her son Bob.  They spent so much time together and she was such a big supporter of all of his endeavors.

Of course she had a huge liking for her favorite team, the Tampa Bay Lightning.  She attended many games in person, and when she was not at Amalie Arena, she would be watching the games at home or at one of the local sports bars.  She loved going to  The Drift Inn at Bradenton Beach and of course Slicker’s Eatery.  It was amazing to see photos of her just several weeks before she passed at a game.  Many family members attended the game with her, she met several of the players and had her photo up on the big screen.  Bob arranged the entire evening and that was a very special “goodbye” for her.  I was speechless when I saw the photos.

Ellen Scott will be greatly missed but her spirit will live on.  She is looking down on us, laughing, smiling and telling everyone to get your butt back to work.

Here are a few quotes from friends and family from social media (there are hundreds of more tributes, Visit Ellen’s, Bob’s and Molly’s Facebook page to read them all)

Molly Slicker- The phrase I notice people keep saying when they reach out with condolences about Grandma Ellen passing is “she was an icon.” Her life story easily could’ve been one defined by loss, but she turned it into one of service. She never missed one of my events, a Lightning game, or an opportunity to remind anyone and everyone she still has my 1st birthday photo on her fridge. She was fiercely loyal, resilient, generous, and quick-witted. A matriarch unlike any other. We were lucky to be so loved by her. She was an icon.

Sally Slicker- Tonight I came to the Anna Maria Moose lodge. It is different from past years when Ellen Scott would be at our table waiting for Bernie, Corbin and I to get here. Gma Ellen would always have a snack for Corbin. Now Corbin is in school and plays baseball, so he doesn’t come anymore. Ellen would help check cards at the door, guard our tables, and read the local papers. We would share pretzel bites and onion rings and pizza. She would tell me when she knew of a yard sale and when I had to be at her house to go with Dort Davis and her to the sales. I just took for granted we would do our Wednesday routine for years to come. I read the papers, drank a beer and looked across the table at the empty chair. It’s not the same. I miss the routine we had for the past 4 yrs. But if she is looking down today, she knows I bought my “rip off” tickets and didn’t win again. I miss you.

Betsy Plante- Ellen Scott you have no idea how sad I am. I appreciate everything about you and all you did to make our community a better place. I do know I will be hugging you in heaven. You were loved by so many. Until we meet again my Sister!

Our condolences to all of the family members and Ellen’s friends.

Ellen, you are missed so much.

Love to all.
