Mookie’s Favorite Outdoor Hangouts: Three Suncoast Restaurants Where Everyone Knows His Name
Some restaurant regulars are remembered for their favorite drink, their usual table or the meal they order every week. Mookie, a seven-pound Shih Tzu with a big personality, is remembered for something entirely different: his determination to receive a bacon treat.
Mookie has become a familiar and much-loved visitor at three local outdoor restaurant and bar destinations: The Swordfish Grill & Tiki Bar, Cortez Kitchen and Clancy’s Irish Sports Pub & Grill.
At each stop, bartenders, servers and other staff members greet him like an old friend. Some come over to say hello before they even speak to the humans at the table. Mookie happily accepts the attention, but he also knows why he is there.
He wants bacon.
And once Mookie realizes bacon may be available, he does not give up easily. He watches the bartenders, waits patiently and begins his unmistakable routine of staring, begging and reminding everyone that a small dog has been waiting far too long for his treat.

Swordfish Grill & Tiki Bar: Waterfront Views and a Warm Welcome
Located along the Cortez waterfront, The Swordfish Grill & Tiki Bar is one of Mookie’s favorite places to spend an afternoon or evening.
The restaurant is known for fresh seafood, live entertainment, tropical drinks and views of the working Cortez waterfront. Its open-air setting allows guests to enjoy the activity around the docks while taking in the relaxed atmosphere of one of Florida’s oldest fishing communities. The restaurant is open seven days a week and offers boat access near Mile Marker 49.
For Mookie, however, the biggest attraction is the staff.
The bartenders and servers know him well, and their affection for him is obvious whenever he arrives. He receives plenty of attention, friendly greetings and, most importantly, the possibility of a bacon treat.
Once Mookie takes his place, he begins watching everyone behind the bar. He may be small, but he has an impressive ability to make his presence known. His persistence usually pays off, and the moment his treat arrives is one of the highlights of his visit.
Mookie also attracts attention from nearby customers. People smile when they see him sitting quietly, watching the staff and waiting for his bacon. Conversations begin, strangers become friends and Mookie once again becomes the unofficial ambassador of the outdoor dining area.

Cortez Kitchen: Old Florida Charm and Another Place Mookie Calls Home
Just down the waterfront, Cortez Kitchen offers a casual outdoor setting that reflects the character of historic Cortez.
The restaurant combines an Old Florida atmosphere with seafood, live music and views of fishing boats traveling along the water. Local tourism information describes it as a family-friendly favorite where seafood arrives at the docks and guests can watch the boats while enjoying the outdoor dining area.
It is also another place where Mookie is treated like family.
The bartenders and staff members recognize him immediately. They stop to pet him, talk to him and make him feel as though he is one of the restaurant’s most important guests.
Of course, Mookie does not allow all that attention to distract him from his mission.
The begging begins as soon as he believes there may be bacon nearby. He looks from one staff member to another, patiently applying the kind of pressure that only a determined little dog can deliver. He does not bark out demands or cause a commotion. He simply keeps watching until someone understands exactly what he wants.
The staff members usually know.
Mookie’s visits are about more than receiving a treat. His friendly personality and gentle nature bring people together. Customers notice him, employees smile and the entire outdoor area seems a little happier when he is there.

Clancy’s Irish Sports Pub & Grill: Irish Hospitality With a Florida Tiki-Bar Spirit
Mookie’s other favorite outdoor destination is Clancy’s Irish Sports Pub & Grill on Cortez Road in Bradenton.
Clancy’s has served the Bradenton community since 2000, combining the welcoming atmosphere of an Irish pub with the casual energy of its outdoor Freaki Tiki bar. The restaurant offers food, drinks, sports viewing, live entertainment and a busy schedule of community activities.
For Mookie, Clancy’s is another home away from home.
The bartenders and staff members genuinely love seeing him. He is welcomed with smiles, affection and plenty of attention. Like a true regular, he knows the surroundings, recognizes the people and settles comfortably into the outdoor atmosphere.
Then he remembers the bacon.
Mookie’s patient campaign begins again. He stares toward the bar, follows the movements of familiar staff members and refuses to abandon hope. He understands that persistence is important, especially when bacon is involved.
His routine has become part of the fun. Staff members laugh, customers smile and Mookie enjoys every moment of being the center of attention.

A Small Dog Who Brings a Lot of Happiness
Mookie may visit these restaurants because he enjoys being outside, seeing familiar faces and receiving the occasional bacon treat, but his presence offers something in return.
He makes people happy.
Bartenders look forward to seeing him. Servers stop by to give him attention. Customers smile as they watch him patiently negotiate for his treat. Even people who have never met him before quickly understand why he is so special.
Mookie does not care whether someone is a restaurant owner, bartender, server, musician, customer or first-time visitor. Everyone receives the same friendly look and gentle affection.
At The Swordfish Grill & Tiki Bar, Cortez Kitchen and Clancy’s Irish Sports Pub & Grill, Mookie is more than a dog sitting in an outdoor dining area. He is a familiar face, a conversation starter and a four-legged reminder of how much happiness a small act of affection can bring.
He arrives looking for bacon, but he leaves behind something much more valuable: smiles, laughter and a little extra love for everyone around him……. Something we all need.
