Mookie Turns 5: The Little Dog Who Saved My Life
Mookie turns five today, and it still amazes me how much life can change in such a short time—especially when it arrives on four small paws. When I first brought him home, I was in the middle of radiation treatments, a period defined by exhaustion, uncertainty, and quiet fear. I didn’t know then that this tiny Shih Tzu wouldn’t just be a companion. He would be my anchor.
Radiation has a way of shrinking your world. Days revolve around appointments, side effects, and waiting. Mookie changed that immediately. He gave my days structure and purpose when I needed it most. No matter how drained I felt, he needed to be fed, walked, cuddled, and loved. And in caring for him, I slowly began caring for myself again. He never knew I was sick—he only knew that I was his. That unconditional devotion was healing in ways medicine alone could never be.

From the very beginning, Mookie had a personality larger than his size. He was house-trained in a week, alert, affectionate, and deeply tuned into my emotions. On the hardest days, he stayed close, curling up beside me as if standing guard. On better days, he reminded me to laugh, to move, to step back into the world.
And step into the world we did.
Somewhere along the way, Mookie became a local celebrity. Around town, people know his name before they know mine. He’s greeted with smiles, waves, and the inevitable, “Can I pet him?” He has an uncanny ability to make strangers feel like friends and bad days feel lighter. Kids light up when they see him. Adults soften. He has that rare gift of joy—effortless, genuine, contagious.
Then there’s the bacon.

Mookie doesn’t just beg for bacon—he earns it. He works the room with professional-level charm, perfect timing, and unwavering eye contact. A tilt of the head here, a well-placed sit there, and suddenly bacon appears. It’s impossible to resist him, and he knows it. Just ask Nancy, Tori or Cara at Cortez Kitchen, Sara at Clancy’s, Morgan, Jordyn & Jessi at Swordfish Grill.
To date, Mookie has flown more than 50 times, traveled the country by my side, and never leaves my side unless absolutely necessary. He is my best friend, my shadow, and the living proof that sometimes the smallest beings make the biggest difference.

And now he has a new mission loving those 2 special little girls, Nova and Charlee.
Five years ago, I brought a dog home.
What I didn’t realize was that he would change my life forever. 🐾❤️
